Pierrevert (Church of Saint-Pierre de Pierrevert)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Church of Saint-Pierre de Pierrevert.
Shooting Spot: 43°48'21.2"N 5°47'54.2"E.
Shooting date and time: October 17th 2024 at 7:25 am.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: We will photograph (weather permitting :)) the October 2024 Supermoon aligned with the Church of Saint-Pierre de Pierrevert and above a typical provencal village (Pierrevert). The target is at 4 km from the shooting spot, which will allow for a rather big moon (~40 m apparent size) compared to the foreground. The photo presents some challenges as we will be at the start of the blue hour, so exposure bracketing might be required (will try to avoid of course)...on the other side the moon will be setting which means that we will have time to make last minute/second adjustments and maybe shoot different compositions...in which case prepare to run with your tripod and camera :)...so, you see, also some physical activity is included for free !!
How to get to the shooting spot: just insert the coordinates in google maps...I tested and it works perfectly
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (200-600mm), good mood :) !.
Planner: Donato Lioce.

Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 6:48 pm (Greece time - Gmt+3). I use to be at the spot at least one hour before the alignment occurs. So, i will be there at about 5:30 pm. I will inform everyone in case something goes wrong (bad weather, personal problem or anything else).
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Athens International Airport Control Tower. Given the fact that there is plenty of space to move we will try two shots, one with the Moon Behind the Tower and one above the Tower. The Shooting Distance is 2.7km so as the size of the Moon (26.2m) to be bigger than the Air Traffic Control Tower's main structure. Furthermore, the shooting will take place at the end of Golden Hour which is ideal for that capture.
What to bring: Camera, Tripod, Intervalometer (lets try to avoid camera timer so as to be fast in case a plane passes), Any Lens over 300mm will be fine.
Planner: Babis Kotsiotas.

The highest point of the church is the top of the dome, which stands around 40 meters tall. The moon's center will be aligned with the dome at approximately 45 meters in height. The shot will be taken from a distance of 5.6 km, giving the moon an apparent diameter of 54 meters—larger than the church itself. The photo will be captured during the golden hour, with the sun just below the horizon (elevation -0.14°), creating soft, beautiful lighting as the moon subtly emerges behind the monument.
Description 2: The full moon will rise behind the iconic Basilica of San Luca, one of Bologna’s most famous landmarks. The highest point of the church is the top of the dome, which stands around 40 meters tall. The moon's center will be aligned with the dome at approximately 38-40 meters in height. The shot will be taken from a distance of 4 km, giving the moon an apparent diameter of 39 meters—roughly the same size as the dome itself. The photo will be captured at the start of the blue hour, with the sun just below the horizon, creating soft, cool lighting as the moon subtly emerges behind the monument.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: The red pin marks the location on the road, so you can use any navigation app to reach it easily. However, parking is limited, so find a spot along the roadside while ensuring you do not obstruct traffic.

Madeira (Ribeira da Janela)
Photo: Supermoon rising over sea stacks at Ribeira da Janela.
Shooting Spot: 32.85530, -17.15360.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 7:30 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the dramatic sea stacks of Ribeira da Janela, on the north coast of the island. The Supermoon should rise over the sea beside the sea stacks which are 30 meters offshore. The shot occurs as the Moon rises over the sea with Sun behind the mountains, so the sky should have lots of colour.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take one of three routes to the Miradouro dos Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (70-200mm), wide angle lens (14mm).
Planner: Colin Watts.
Palmela (Palmela Castle)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with Palmela castle (Castelo de Palmela)
Shooting Spot: 38.563845N, 8.918396W.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 7:48 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The moon will rise behind Palmela Castle. The elevation of the hill is approximately 232m and I can’t find an accurate figure for the height of the castle, but I estimate it to be 25-30m. At around 7:45pm the supermoon should start rising behind the main castle building and the keep. The moon apparent size would be about 14.5m. We will aim to get to the location before sunset at around 7:00pm and find a good shooting spot and composition. The shooting location is a short walk from the road, some parts are on uneven ground.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: The trail “Caminho dos Moinhos” starts just off Rua Helena Cardoso, is narrow and only partly accessible by vehicle. There may be space for a few cars right next to Padaria Julião, but be considerate that it is a narrow road and other local traffic may use that space to do a U-turn. There may also be street parking on Rua Helena Cardoso. Otherwise there’s a car park at the Palmela bus terminal a short distance away. From the start of Camino dos Moinhos, it is a short 850m (15m) hike to the location that is on a ridge, providing clear unobstructed views of the castle.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (150-600mm) headlamp or flashlight, comfortable walking/hiking shoes and clothes.
Planner: Jonathan Poh.
Puerto Rico
Maunabo (Punta Tuna Lighthouse)
Photo: Supermoon rising behind the Punta Tuna Lighthouse in Maunabo.
Shooting Spot: 17.983011, -65.907035.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 6:18pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will be rising behind the historic Punta Tuna Lighthouse. The lighthouse was constructed in 1892 and the tower stands at around 60ft. Shooting distance is 1.5 miles and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 76ft. The shot occurs just after blue hour ends but still during civil twilight (Sun elevation -4.79°). The moon will have a beautiful yellow color and expect enough light to be able to expose for the lighthouse and the moon in one shot.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Stay on road #3 after passing the town of Maunabo on your way to Patillas. You will need to make the second left after turning left to Road #3 after the town of Maunabo. If you have GPS you can type Playa California and the GPS coordinates for the parking spot is 17.983192, -65.907489.
Planner: Jaime L. Montilla.
South Africa
Cape Town (Kalk Bay harbour beacons)
Photo: Supermoon aligned next to Kalk Bay harbour beacons.
Shooting Spot: -34.128448, 18.448301.
Shooting Date & Time: 17th October 2024 at 7:00 PM
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise over the Kogelberg mountains shortly after Sunset. We have a few options for Moon placement: between both beacons on the harbour walls or directly over a selected beacon. Slightly wider photos with the Moon will also work well, with the harbour and boats included in the foreground once the Moon has risen slightly higher into the sky. Due to alignment challenges, we can't be very far from the beacons, but the Moon (1-2 m depending on th shooting spot) will still appear fairly large compared to the small beacon size. The Moon should have a stunning golden colour as it will rise shortly after sunset. Photo Credit: Christoff Theunissen.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Park across from Olympia Café in Kalk Bay and meet on the beach directly in front of the harbour. Meeting spot: -34.127661, 18.448315.
What to bring: Camera, Tripod, Telephoto lens (200-600mm range)
Planner: Kyle Goetsch.
Spain
Almodovar del Río (Castillo de Almodovar del Río)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Castle of Almodóvar del Río.
Shooting Spot: 37.791910, -5.098185
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, at 7:46 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Castle of Almodóvar del Río in Córdoba. The fortress has Berber origins, its architectural style is Islamic, and it dates back to the 8th century. It is situated on a hill that is 252 m high, with the castle itself being 33 m tall (at its highest point) and 80 m wide. The shooting distance is 6.8 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 66 m. The photo will be taken during the golden hour with the Sun's elevation at -1.48º and the Moon's at 1.34°, so I expect the Moon to have an orange/pink hue, and if the clouds permit, we will also be able to capture it along with the "Belt of Venus," as shown in the example photo.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take the A-445 road from Posadas towards La Fuencubierta, and 1 km in, you’ll find the parking lot on the right at 37.7919291, -5.0999780.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-600mm).
Planner: Jordi Coy.
Barcelona (Sagrada Familia and Torre Agbar)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Sagrada Familia and Torre Agbar.
Shooting Spot: 41.387840, 2.102740.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17 2024, at 7:04 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will be rising over the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona (172 m tall) and Torre Agbar (144 m). The shooting distance is 6.2 km, so the apparent size of the Supermoon will be 60.6 m. The Elevation of the Sun will be around 0.12º (Golden hour). Expect the Moon to have a beautiul color.
Directions to the Shooting Spot: The shooting spot is located next to"El Mirador de Finestrelles" and the school Thau. Parc in the streets close to the shooting spot.
What to Bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (300-1000mm.)
Planner: Ramón Pérez
Barcelona (Collserola Tower)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Collserola Tower.
Shooting Spot: 41.395197, 1.996501.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024 at 7:19 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Collserola Tower on the Turó de Mont and Font de la Budellera, in Barcelona. This spot above the city of Barcelona features an observation deck located on the tenth floor, at an altitude of around 650 m above sea level. The tower itself is approximately 270 meters high. The shooting distance is 10.2 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 99.1 m. The photo will be taken towards the end of the golden hour, ensuring warm light with the last sunlight (Sun elevation -2.54º), which is expected to give the moon warm, soft orange tones. Additionally, the light pollution from Barcelona is not expected to affect the expected results or cause any light-related discrepancies.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: From the B-23 highway, take the exit at Sant Vicenç dels Horts and ascend through the urban streets until you reach the intersection of Osca and Llacuna streets, where you can park your vehicle (or in adjacent areas) and walk to point 41.395197, 1.996501.
What to bring: camera, tripod and stabilizer (optional), telephoto lens (300-600mm or higher) and teleconverter (optional), shutter release or intervalometer for the moon sequence.
Planner: Carles Rubio.
Campo de Criptana (Windmills of La Mancha)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with a set of six historic windmills of La Mancha.
Shooting Spot: 39.402564, -3.157299.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024 at 19:38.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will appear behind the historic windmills of Campo de Criptana and will align with a set of six of them, with four other windmills a bit further away. You can also capture a wider shot that includes all ten windmills in this beautiful town located in the heart of La Mancha, where you can see one of the best sunsets in Spain. The shooting distance is 3.2 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent size of 31 meters. The windmills are approximately 10 meters tall, including their roof, also called the "caperuza," and they have a diameter of about 6 meters. The photo will be taken 8 minutes after sunset, providing ideal light for this type of photography.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take the CM-420 road that connects Alcázar de San Juan with Campo de Criptana. At approximately kilometer 4.600, there's a path heading north (39.400548, -3.155872). Be very cautious when turning onto the path as it is a busy road (signal your turn well in advance). Once on the path, after about 120 meters, park the car on a side road to the left, and then walk around 130 meters to the shooting spot.
What to bring: Camera, tripod, remote shutter release, telephoto lens (focal length between 200 and 800 mm), optionally a 2x teleconverter. There is a restaurant-gas station less than 1 km away if you need refreshments or to use the bathroom.
Planner: Jesús Manzaneque Arteaga.

According to Wikipedia, the lighthouse was built in 1891 by the Girona Shipwreck Rescue Society and was inaugurated on the night of December 16, 1913. The shot will be taken at the end of the blue hour, with the sun at an elevation of -10.90º and the moon at 9.98º.
Description Plan 2: Supermoon aligned with theS'Aranella Lighthouse. Moon size is 2.7m and Sun elevation -3.77 (end of golden hour). Shooting time is 7:17 pm.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take the GI-612 road from Llançà to Port de la Selva. At the point 42.350038, 3.178727, take CARRER CAP DE VOL street to the end. Park there and walk about 50 meters to reach the viewpoint along the coastal path.
What to bring: Camera, tripod, lens (Plan 1: 50mm, Plan 2: 50mm-200mm).

Cartagena (Cabo de Palos Lighthouse)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with Cabo de Palos Lighthouse
Shooting Spot: 37.626892, -0.726749.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024 at 7:28 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse. For over 150 years, the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse has been ensuring the safety of navigation in this part of the Murcian coastline. Its singular and majestic architecture has deservedly made it one of the most beautiful and largest lighthouses on our coasts. It was declared a site of cultural interest on July 1st, 2002. The height of the lighthouse is 51 meters above the ground and 81 meters above sea level. The shooting distance is 3.3 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 32.4 meters. The photo will be taken during golden hour (Sun elevation -0.86º), so I expect the Moon to have a beautiful yellow color.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: From the La Manga/RM-12 Highway, take exit 16 and follow the signs towards Playa Honda/Playa Paraíso. Park near the shooting spot.
What to bring: camera, tripod, remote shutter release, telephoto lens (300-500mm).
Planner: Jorge Carrillo.
Cartagena (Isla de las Hormigas)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Isla de las Hormigas.
Shooting Spot: 37.641713, -0.710650.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, at 19:22 h.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Isla de las Hormigas, directly behind its small lighthouse. The lighthouse we know today was built in 1870 after the previous one from 1860 was destroyed during a major Levante storm. This lighthouse serves to warn navigators of the dangers posed by the islets and rocky elevations in the area (shoals).
As a fun fact, it was the first lighthouse in Spain to be automated, in the year 1920. The structure consists of two parts: a circular building about 20 meters in external diameter and a white cylindrical tower. The light source is located about 12 meters above the base of the building and about 23 meters above sea level. The photo will be taken during the golden hour (Sun elevation -0.17º), so I expect the Moon to have a beautiful yellow hue.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Head towards La Manga del Mar Menor. Right at the entrance, at the Playa de las Amoladeras, enter the parking areas near the Entremares Hotel. Given the time of year, there should be no parking issues. Nearby references include the Diving Club, Mesón Caribe Junior. Nearest parking location (37.641487, -0.710683). On the beach shore, you'll find the Chiringuito la Valentina.
What to bring: Water, insect repellent, camera, remote shutter, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm).
Planner: José Luis Rueda Plaza.
Chinchilla de Monte (Castle of Chinchilla)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Castle of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón.
Shooting Spot: 38.908440ºN 1.780425ºW.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17, 2024, at 19:34.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Castle of Chinchilla. The shooting distance is 4.6 km, and the Moon will have an apparent size of 44.9 meters. The photo will be taken during blue hour (Sun elevation -2º), so the natural light in the environment will have cool tones. The Castle of Chinchilla is a Spanish fortress reconstructed in the 15th century, located on the Cerro de San Blas in the town of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón, Albacete. For nearly three centuries, it was used as a prison. Among its most notable prisoners was César Borgia (son of Pope Alexander VI).
How to get to the shooting spot: Take exit 12 of the A30 highway (Albacete-Murcia) and follow the road that leads to the wind turbines until you reach point 38.907665ºN 1.782827ºW, an open area where you can park and walk up the small hill where the shooting spot is located.
What to bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-400 mm).
Planner: Marta Vilar Alonso.
Chinchón (Castle of Chinchón)
Photo: Supermoon behind the Castle of Chinchón.
Shooting Spot: 40.132008, 3.446380.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, at 7:47 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Moon will rise behind the Castle of Chinchón, slightly to the right. Since the shooting distance is 1.9 km, the apparent size of the Moon will be 18.9 m. By that time, the Sun will have already set (at 7:31 pm), so it won’t interfere with the view of the Supermoon. The shot will be taken right in the middle of civil twilight, with enough ambient light, so I expect to capture the scene with a single exposure. Chinchón is about an hour from Madrid.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: The spot I’ve chosen is on the edge of the M-305 road. Right there, a small path begins, so I have space for my motorbike and tripod, but I’m not sure where cars can park. Looking at the map, I’d say that a few meters earlier, a wider path heads south, and there should be parking available there (40.131045, -3.447932).
What to bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm).
Planner: Gabriel Gómez.
Cullera (Castel of Cullera)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with Cullera Castle.
Shooting Spot: 39.152142, -0.316073.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, at 7:24 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: My first Supermoon, and the one that made me PhotoPiller of the Day for the first time in December 2017, was at Cullera Castle. This photo has become a classic among Moon lovers and it is always different. We’ll be shooting among rice fields, at a distance of 5.9 km from the castle, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 58 m. The photo takes place during the golden hour (Sun elevation -1.19º), so we’ll have a softly lit landscape without harsh shadows, the city lights on, and a spectacular yellow Moon rising behind the medieval walls of the castle.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take the road from Sueca towards Alzira. When you reach the Corbera roundabout, head towards Favara, and at the next roundabout, take the road that goes under the highway. I recommend parking about 200 m after passing the tunnel. It’s a wide agricultural path, and from there, walk about 500 meters to the shooting spot. The path gets narrower, and parking is not possible. It would be ideal to leave your car at this point: 39.148372, -0.318912. If you’re coming with friends, I also recommend carpooling.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm).
Planner: Toni Sendra.
Écija (Torre de Santa María)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Tower of Santa María in Écija (Sevilla).
Shooting Spot: 37.536657, -5.091743.
Shooting Date and Time: October 18, 2024, at 20:23h.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Tower of the Church of Santa María in Écija. This tower, featuring Baroque, Neoclassical, and Mudejar styles, is the tallest in Écija (52m), has the most bells, and bears a resemblance to the Giralda of Seville. The shooting distance is 1.1 km, which cannot be increased as the city is situated in the valley of the Genil River, surrounded by higher ground relative to the historic center. Even so, the moon will have an apparent size of 11.1m, which, compared to the tower’s height of 52m and width of approximately 8m at its base, will create a spectacular proportion, making the moon appear as though it is embracing the tower. The photo will be taken during blue hour (Sun elevation -9.62º and Moon elevation 1.72º), so the tower’s lights will be on, allowing for a beautiful contrast of lights.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: I recommend parking in the town and walking to the shooting spot at 37.536657, -5.091743.
What to bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm), remote shutter release, and a good attitude to have fun and enjoy a good time.
Planner: Álvaro Ocaña.

Description: The Supermoon will rise behind Roque Bentayga. It is a geological formation and site of ancient aboriginal settlements. It is located near the village of Tejeda, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

From La Aldea de San Nicolás: La Aldea- Artenara road GC-210, Presa del Parralillo-GC-210.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm), 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, water, snacks (no shops in the area).
Planner: Beny Aguiar.

Shooting Spot: 39.115274, 1.519763.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th at 7:29 pm.

Description: The Supermoon will rise from the horizon at 19:08 and ascend until it aligns with the Moscarter Lighthouse, which is 52 meters tall. The distance from the shooting position to the lighthouse is 1.2 km, and the apparent diameter of the Moon will be 11.6 meters. For the photo, the Moon’s elevation will be 3.34°, and the Sun’s negative elevation will be -4.20°, allowing us to capture the Moon’s orange hue.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Parc in Portinatx and then do a short walk to the shooting spot.
What to bring: It is recommended to bring a camera, tripod, telephoto lens between 100 and 500 mm, and a remote shutter.
Planner: Jose Antonio Hervás Mora.

PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the church of Santa Maria de Cervera, which is situated on top of a hill. The bell tower is 51 meters tall, and the photo can be taken with the Supermoon aligned with the bell tower or positioned beside it, above the church. The shooting distance is 2.0 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 19.2 meters. The photo will be taken during civil twilight (Sun elevation -5.14º), so I expect the Moon to have a beautiful yellow color.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Once in Cervera, take the L-214 road towards Granyena de Segarra. After about 1 km, take the turn towards Granyanella on the LV-2141 road and continue for another 1.2 km until you reach the parking spot (41.661100, 1.244443).
What to bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-600mm).

Madrid (Pirulí)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with El Pirulí in Madrid.
Shooting Spot: 40.389677, -3.806552.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, at 7:32 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will position itself behind the top of 'El Pirulí', an iconic tower in Madrid that houses a communications center within its 220 m of height, from which several TV channels and radio stations broadcast to the world. The shooting distance is 12.6 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 122.1 m. The photo will be taken during the golden hour (Sun elevation -0.40º), so the Moon will appear quite large over the top of this communications building.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: By car, the parking area is Calle Edgar Neville, 9, 28223 Pozuelo de Alarcón. By Light Metro, stop at: Cocheras. From these points, it’s about a 15-minute walk through the field to the shooting spot.
What to bring: The essentials, don’t carry all your gear… camera, tripod, telephoto lens (200mm and up). Don’t forget that you’ll be in the field, so wear appropriate clothing and footwear. On the way back, it will be dark, so a flashlight or headlamp is recommended.
Planner: Chechu Fotografía.

Photo: Supermoon aligned with Alcanada Lighthouse.
Shooting Spot: 39.823846 3.117176.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 7:04 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind Alcanada Lighthouse. An iconic lighthouse in Mallorca, located on an islet on the beach of Alcanada. The shooting spot is 6.6km from the lighthouse, so the use of telephoto lenses is recommended. In this link you can find information about the lighthouse, from its history to the technical aspects. For this photo, there are plenty of compositions, from the Moon behind the lighthouse, to the right or to the left, so if time permits we will have a good time photographing the Supermoon.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Take direction to Alcúdia Beach and you will find parking near the shooting point.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (300-600mm).

Shooting Date and Time: October 17, 2024, at 19:36.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the beautiful Monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt, also known as La Mola. The building, of Romanesque style, was erected in the mid-11th century and reconstructed between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. It is located at the highest point of the natural park.
The shooting distance is 2.9 km, and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 28.9 m. The photo will be taken at the end of blue hour (Sun elevation -6.20º), so the Moon will already be nearly white. Perhaps it's a good opportunity to practice blue hour blending to capture more detail in the monastery.
How to get to the shooting spot: There’s nothing better to complete a great photo than to take a hike to capture it! The hike is not too long (1.5 km and 200 m elevation gain). The starting point is La Barata (Matadepera). If you want to do the hike together, send me a message!

Description: The Supermoon will set behind Split Mountain, one of the tallest mountains in California at 14,064 ft / 4287 meters. Shooting distance is 16.8 mi / 27 km and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 866 ft / 264 m. The shot occurs in golden hour just as the first light hits the mountain (Sun elevation -0.86º), so I expect the Moon to have a beautiful light yellow to pink color.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: From highway 395 in Independence, California, take Mazourka Canyon road 1 hour to the shooting spot. AWD or 4x4 with good tires required. If many people register we can organize carpools from Independence.
What to bring: Camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm), remote shutter release. Jacket, gloves, and a hat.
Planner: Joshua Cripps.
Kansas City (KCPL Apartments)
Photo: Supermoon behind the peak of the KCPL Apartments
Shooting Spot: 39°05'46.0"N 94°35'32.6"W (On the Summit St Bridge)
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 7:31 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the KCPL Apartments – an iconic part of the skyline for decades. This building is an Art Deco masterpiece that was the tallest building west of the Mississippi from 1931 – 1962. The building is roughly 115’ x 132’ giving the moon an apart size of 24’ at the shooting location (2,480 from the target). The shot occurs towards the end of Nautical twilight (Sun elevation -11.61º), so I expect the Moon to be very vibrant.
How to get to the shooting spot: Take I-35 to exit 1C (if Northbound) or 1D (if Southbound). Head North to the intersection of W 16th St & Summit St. There is street parking all through the area. (39.095596004997034, -94.59328677197256).
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (200 – 600mm), shutter release if camera delay isn’t available.
Planner: Michael Edwards.
Minneapolis (City Skyline)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with the Minneapolis, Minnesota, US city skyline.
Shooting Spot: Approx. 44.970109°N, 93.289395°W.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th, 2024, between 6:45 - 7:30 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the Minneapolis city skyline. The general camera location is in a large public park around 1.5 km away with lots of room to move around and find your own spot. There are many telephoto options with the downtown buildings. The shooting location is also adjacent to the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture in the Minneapolis Sculpture Art garden, so wide angle and cellphone shots featuring this iconic sculpture will work well. The city skyline offers flexibility in shooting time, too.
How to get to the shooting spot: Park anywhere in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden parking lot 44.970281°N, 93.290984°W. Walk east to the Spoonbridge/Cherry area.
What to bring: camera, tripod, wide and/or telephoto lens (24 – 70mm, or 100-500mm).

New York (Catskill-Frederick Chruch's Olana Residence)
Photo: Supermoon aligned with Frederic Church's Olana Residence.
Shooting Spot: 42.212154, -73.854744.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th 2024 at 6:15-7:15 pm (arrive much earlier to find a spot and set up!). Moonrise behind Olana Residence is around 6:35/6:40 pm.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will rise behind the elegant residence of Hudson River School painter Frederic Chruch within Olana State Historic Site from Catskill, NY. Reminiscent of Middle Eastern architecture Church observed during his travels, the residence was designed by Calvert Vaux, who also designed many of Central Park's buildings in New York City. The residence starts 495 feet above the Hudson River, total height unlisted. Shooting distance is 1.4 miles and the Supermoon will have an apparent diameter of 70 feet. The shot occurs in nautical twilight (Sun elevation -5.67º), so I expect the Moon to have a neutral to slightly blue color.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Drive to Dutchman's Landing park in Catskill, NY. Parking (42.2121570, -73.8547697).
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (100-500mm or longer with teleconverter). Example image is 1200mm telescope cropped from full frame sensor. We will likely be chasing the Moonrise so travel light so you can grab and go when the action starts.
Planner: Matt Hill.
Washington DC (Airforce Memorial)
Photo: 100% Super moonset over Air Force Memorial from Hains Point 2.3 miles away
Shooting Spot: 38.861676, -77.025029.
Shooting Date and Time: October 17th at 7:12 am.
PhotoPills Plan: Plan (KMZ file).
Description: The Supermoon will set in between the Air Force Memorial spires. Since that angle passes over interstate highway 395, it will be a clear line of sight of the memorial. Shooting distance will be from 2.3 miles away (Moon diameter 116 feet). Natural light will be golden hour.
How to get to the Shooting Spot: Since the road into Hains Point will be locked during the overnight hours, the plan will be parking at the East Potomac Golf Course parking lot. We can get together as a group to walk the less than 1 mile of flat roads to the shooting location.
What to bring: camera, tripod, telephoto lens (200mm reflection over Potomac waters - 600mm for tight shot)
Planner: Gordon Lau.
