Day 1. Sunday, April 26th - Welcome to Tuscany

It’s early Sunday afternoon...

And you land in Florence (FLR), the capital of the Tuscan region, in Italy.

However, I suggest you arrive the day before to have an extra day to decompress and enjoy Florence’s culture, Renaissance art and architecture... like the magnificent Duomo Cathedral, with its impressive red dome dominating the city’s skyline.

2:00 pm

Tuscany is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, ancient farmhouses, and the unique soft light that has captivated artists for centuries.

After picking you up at the airport we’ll drive directly to our private “podere”: an idyllic villa perched upon the hills of the beautiful Tuscan countryside overlooking the picturesque landscape of Val d’Orcia.

The word “podere” is quintessentially Tuscan, often referring to a farmhouse or estate.

This will be our basecamp for the entire week.

4:00 pm

After settling into our rooms, we will gather for some local delicacies: delightful cakes and refreshing beverages. Welcome to the heart of Tuscany!

4:30 pm

Expedition briefing...

Neil and Solli will go over the expedition itinerary, logistics, equipment and safety instructions for the week.

It’s also time to get to know each other a bit more and answer all your questions.

6:20 pm

Since light won't wait for us...

As the day turns to dusk, we'll make our way to the hills just south of San Quirico d'Orcia.

Here, nestled within this picturesque setting, we have two distinct and equally breathtaking spots to photograph, each offering a unique perspective on the Tuscan landscape.

First, we'll find a magnificent vantage point offering a sweeping view of Pienza, which will glow in the distance. The Sun's gentle side light will exquisitely highlight the textures and layers of nearby hills, creating depth and dimension in the Tuscan countryside.

Next, we'll photograph the iconic Podere Belvedere, utilizing backlight to silhouette the farmhouse and cypress trees. This technique will create a dramatic, artistic portrayal, outlining their forms with a luminous rim that separates them from the background.

7:20 pm

As the Sun starts to set, stretching out shadows and filling the scene with a soft, golden light, we arrive at our Sunset spot by the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.

This famous little church, standing alone in the middle of wide, open fields, perfectly captures the peaceful beauty and timeless feel the area is known for.

Now, we get to decide... Do we snap a shot of the church glowing in the Sunset's backlight, or focus on its lovely front?

So open PhotoPills and check where exactly the Sun is about to set:

Golden hour begins at 7:30 pm, Sunset is at 8:09 pm, golden hour ends at 8:27 pm and blue hour ends at 8:39 pm.

9:30 pm

After a long day of exploring the countryside and hunting for the perfect photo, we finally head back to the villa.

As soon as we pull up, the mouthwatering smell from the kitchen hits us, a clear sign that dinner’s about to start... and we’ve definitely earned it!

Tonight’s menu, crafted by a local chef, is full of Tuscan dishes, letting us dive into the amazing flavors of the region.

The meals switch up every day, offering a mix of Italian favorites and international bites.

11:25 pm

Our first day in Tuscany isn’t just about capturing great photos; it’s about soaking in the vibe of the place, learning a bit of its history, tasting the amazing food, and really living in the moment.

Time to call it off... Tomorrow, we’re off to capture those famous cypress trees!

Photographic Pills

  • Daytime shots of Pienza and Podere Belvedere.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.

Day 2. Monday, April 27th - The Cypresses and the Gladiator

4:15 am

Good morning, Photopillers.

Are you ready for some action?

I bet you are!

5:30 am

Tucked under the bridge, we find the perfect spot to catch the Sunrise. It’s called Boschetto dei Cipressi. If we’re lucky, the sky will start to light up with an amazing mix of colors.

Standing there, looking out over the rolling Tuscan hills, the cypress trees off in the distance seem to call us. We’ll play around with our camera shots: maybe framing some wildflowers in the front, or just waiting for that first golden Sunlight to hit the horizon.

Blue hour begins at 5:43 am, golden hour begins at 5:54 am, Sunrise is at 6:13 am and golden hour ends at 6:52 am.

7:40 am

Over a delicious breakfast back at the villa, we chat about what we've been up to, swap stories about our photos, and get pumped up for the fun that’s still to come.

9:00 am

Time to relax after waking up so early this morning...

11:00 am

PhotoPills Class!

Neil and Solli will show you how to plan your photos with PhotoPills... sharing lots of tips on the way!

1:00 pm

Lunch specially prepared by our chef.

3:30 pm

We’ll spend the afternoon heading south of San Quirico (part of the gorgeous UNESCO world heritage site Val d’Orcia). Huge fields stretch out in neat, almost perfect patterns carved by the plows and time, with a few trees here and there, standing out against the green backdrop.

The gentle hills create a feeling of calm and wide open space, and it's in this peaceful setting that you’ll find some of the most beautiful, stand-alone trees.

There’s this one tree standing alone between two hills. From where we're shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer's eye right to our subject. Their colors will change depending on what crops are growing at the time, giving us a variety of shades that add depth and make for more interesting shots.

4:45 pm

Next is the area south of Pienza, where the hills have a peaceful, almost lonely vibe. The trees stand apart, each one unique, set against a vast, open space.

We're going to take a landscape shot from this little elevated spot, looking south over the rolling hills. The plan is to focus on the two trees that stand perfectly in the middle of the scene, with a farm framed by cypress trees in the background.

From where we’re shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer’s eye straight to our subject. The colors will totally depend on whatever crops are growing at the moment, so each hill might end up looking different from the others. This adds depth and makes our composition feel more lively and interesting.

5:35 pm

As we stroll into Pienza, you can really feel the mix of culture and food. The cobblestone streets, old Renaissance buildings, and lively piazzas all have their own stories to tell.

We make a stop at Gelateria Buon Gusto, where the flavors are packed with that classic Italian charm, making our visit even sweeter.

6:55 pm

As the evening rolls in, Podere Terrapille is ready to welcome you.

If you've seen the movie “Gladiator”, you’ll recognize this path: it’s the one surrounded by golden wheat fields swaying in the breeze, with tall cypress trees lining the way. At the end of it all, there's a villa standing quietly, full of old memories.

In the distance, the mountains catch the last bit of Sunlight, making the view even more breathtaking.

Golden hour begins at 7:30 pm, Sunset is at 8:09 pm, golden hour ends at 8:28 pm and blue hour ends at 8:40 pm.

9:25 pm

The day wraps up back at our cozy villa. As we sit down for dinner, the sound of clinking glasses isn’t just about celebrating today: it’s about the excitement of all the adventures we’ve still got ahead in Tuscany.

10:55 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Boschetto dei Cipressi.
  • Afternoon shots of isolated trees at San Quirico and some quiet hills to the south of Pienza.
  • Ancient streets and architecture at the beautiful village of Pienza.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Podere Terrapille (Gladiator’s villa).

Day 3. Tuesday, April 28th - The Golden Mist and the Cypress Lines

4:00 am

Wake up!

Today we’re heading to one of the most iconic places in the region.

5:30 am

In the heart of Tuscany, you'll find a landscape that's like a work of art. Every hill, every tree, every villa has its own story to tell. By day three of our trip, we’re diving deeper into those stories, trying to capture more than just the sights, we’re after the true spirit of this place, and that’s what we’ll try to accomplish during the early morning at our special location.

Podere Belvedere, with its cozy, rustic vibe, is a spot that stands out. Tucked between rolling fields, it gives you a perfect view of classic Tuscan villas, all wrapped in the soft, swirling morning mist.

As we settle in, the magic of the place really starts to show. During the blue hour, the villas have this dreamy glow, with their windows reflecting the last bits of night. But when the golden hour kicks in, the whole scene sharpens up, showing off every detail, from the terracotta rooftops to the rich green fields spread out below.

Blue hour begins at 5:41 am, golden hour begins at 5:53 am, Sunrise is at 6:11 am and golden hour ends at 6:50 am.

7:50 am

Back at the villa, the mouthwatering smell of breakfast is everywhere. It’s the perfect way to get ready for what’s sure to be an exciting day. Afterwards, there will be some time to relax and catch up on some (well deserved) sleep.

1:00 pm

Enjoy a delicious lunch, specially prepared by our private chef, featuring the freshest local ingredients and traditional Tuscan recipes.

This culinary experience is designed to be a relaxing interlude, offering a taste of authentic regional flavors amidst the beautiful surroundings.

3:40 pm

After a 40-minute drive we arrive at the historical charm of Siena.

Here, we have some free time, allowing you to explore the city's cobblestone streets, marvel at its medieval architecture, and absorb its age-old allure.

It’s the perfect time to improve your urban photography skills!

6:25 pm

Our next stop is going to be something special. As we make our way to the spot, the scenery really starts to open up...

There’s a charming farm sitting on a lovely hill, surrounded by those classic rolling hills you see all around this region.

The view is especially magical when the Sun peeks through the scattered clouds, creating little pockets of light that dance across the hills. That wonderful light makes the fields pop, with soft shadows and highlights that bring the whole scene to life.

We’re timing our visit for when the Sun’s still pretty high, so we can catch that soft light coming from behind and to the left. This kind of side lighting will make the textures of the hills stand out more, giving the whole scene a nice sense of depth.

Depending on the conditions, we’ve got two ways to go: we can go wide to capture the whole farm and its surroundings for that epic landscape shot, or we can zoom in and focus on the key details, like the farm and the gentle curves of the hills.

If you’re fast, you can do both ;)

7:20 pm

After a short drive, we arrive in this beautiful spot: rows of cypress trees with Siena's outline in the background. The whole landscape is glowing in the Sunset.

The way the land stretches out calls for some zoomed-in shots, so we set up our tripods nice and high to make sure we get the whole view just right.

Golden hour begins at 7:33 pm, Sunset is at 8:11 pm, golden hour ends at 8:30 pm and blue hour ends at 8:42 pm.

9:25 pm

We’re back to our villa. As we get there, we can already smell the amazing dinner cooking, and it instantly pulls us in.

11:00 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Podere Belvedere.
  • Afternoon streets and architecture shots in Siena.
  • Late afternoon shots with a secret farm.
  • Sunset, golden hour with the skyline of Siena.

Day 4. Wednesday, April 29th - The Foggy Hills and the Sun Alignment

4:00 am

Rise and shine!

Are you ready to rock?

5:10 am

We have a nice plan for this morning.

From a tranquil Tuscan hill, we overlook an elegant grove 1 km away (0.6 mi) with an unobstructed view and rolling landscape.

For Sunrise, we align to capture the Sun rising directly behind the sparsely treed grove, filtering golden light through the trunks. With fog, this creates a magical display of light beams and warm, pulsing horizon.

In these conditions, the grove transforms into layered silhouettes, bathed in diffused light. The composition excels when the grove is placed slightly off-center, allowing the frame to breathe, the fog to move, and the light and mood to develop.

Blue hour begins at 5:38 am, golden hour begins at 5:50 am, Sunrise is at 6:08 am and golden hour ends at 6:48 am.

7:15 am

After capturing the golden Tuscan light at Sunrise, we take a break to enjoy a well-earned breakfast followed by some time to relax.

11:00 am

Time for an interesting post-processing class with Neil and Solli. We'll review our captures, discuss composition choices, and explore editing techniques to bring out the full potential of our work. It’s a hands-on session designed to refine your vision and take your images to the next level.

1:00 pm

Prepare yourself for a culinary journey unlike any other, as you delve into the exquisite creations meticulously crafted by our esteemed chef.

After that we’ll enjoy some down time.

4:30 pm

As the day goes on, we'll make our way to the hills just south of San Quirico d'Orcia.

There, we'll find two lone cypress trees standing proudly against the rolling hills.

Grab your telephoto lens and have fun experimenting with the composition. Try centering the trees or playing with off-balance shots, always aiming for that perfect harmony.

And if there are clouds, why don’t you include them in your shot?

4:50 pm

Our next stop is just a quick drive down the road, where two majestic oak trees are waiting for us.

Their twisted branches and sprawling canopies offer a different texture and mood.

For a stunning shot, try using a wide-angle lens to capture their elegance, or switch to a longer focal length to highlight all the unique details and character of each tree.

Let your creativity run wild!

5:20 pm

Just a short drive away, the iconic Croce di Prata awaits.

This elevated position provides a sweeping panorama of rolling hills, meticulously cultivated fields, and scattered farmhouses, all bathed in the warm, late afternoon light.

The cross itself, a simple yet powerful focal point.

This spot is perfect for capturing the vastness and serene beauty of Tuscany, with its subtle variations in color and texture that unfold across the expansive vista.

7:10 pm

After a short stop in Pienza, just long enough to grab a delicious ice cream, we arrive at our next location. It's perfect for the Sun alignment we have planned and for practicing what we've learned about PhotoPills!

Can you imagine it?

There are unobstructed views of Pienza in the distance.

Our shot focuses on the 37-meter (121-foot) bell tower, aiming for the setting Sun to align directly behind or beside it for a dramatic silhouette. From our shooting location (about 3.6 km, 2.24 mi), the relative size of the Sun will be 33 m (108.27 ft). We'll frame the shot to capture the Sun either touching, resting behind, or partially concealed by the tower, creating a captivating glowing outline.

Golden hour begins at 7:32 pm, Sunset is at 8:11 pm, golden hour ends at 8:30 pm and blue hour ends at 8:42 pm.

9:25 pm

Indulge in our chef's masterful Tuscan creations, featuring fresh, local ingredients and traditional flavors for a memorable dining experience.

11:15 pm

Good night, Photopillers.

Sleep tight!

Photographic Pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at a cypress grove.
  • Afternoon shots at the hills south of San Quirico d’Orcia.
  • Sunset and golden hour with views over Pienza.
  • Sun alignment with the bell tower of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Pienza (if clear skies).

Day 5. Thursday, April 30th - The Iconic Hill and the Moon Alignment

4:15 am

Ready for another amazing day?

Light won't wait for us!

5:40 am

The Sunrise light gives the landscape a whole new vibe.

When you think of Tuscany, one of the first images that pops into your head is probably a dirt road lined with cypress trees. And now it’s time to chase it.

So, we set off along the scenic road, heading toward those tall cypress trees, patiently waiting to be framed through our lenses.

The early morning mist clings to the rolling hills, softening the edges of the iconic winding road.

As the Sun begins to peek through, it illuminates the elegant rows of cypress trees.

This is the moment to capture the serene beauty of the Tuscan landscape, with the light transforming the fog into a golden glow, highlighting the timeless allure of this famous vista.

Blue hour begins at 5:38 am, golden hour begins at 5:50 am, Sunrise is at 6:08 am and golden hour ends at 6:48 am.

7:40 am

Back at the villa for some breakfast and to relax afterwards.

1:00 pm

Time for a lunch experience at the villa, featuring the culinary artistry of our acclaimed pizzaiolo.

Savor authentic Italian pizzas, freshly prepared and baked to perfection, showcasing the finest local ingredients.

After this exquisite meal, guests can unwind with a leisurely stroll or relax at the villa.

4:00 pm

Now it’s time for a roundtable session.

The idea is each PhotoPills Master spends some time sitting down with 6 different PhotoPillers for 15 minutes each.

During that time, you can ask about anything related to photography, whether you need advice, feedback on your photos, help planning shots with PhotoPills, or even a bit of guidance on editing your images. It's totally up to you!

6:00 pm

After a short drive, we get to our next location.

We've scheduled a Moon alignment. The location has a lot of potential so we'll arrive early to see the subject up close, looking for alternative compositions and foreground elements.

7:05 pm

Now, with a good understanding of the terrain, we'll proceed to our Moon alignment spot, which is a short distance away.

We'll prepare our gear near an iconic solitary oak on a Tuscan hilltop. This sculptural tree, dominating the countryside, is perfect for a dramatic Moonrise. As the Full Moon rises behind it, the landscape's warm tones soften, allowing the Moon's ethereal glow to take center stage. This alignment harmonizes celestial and earthly elements.

Our aim is to capture the rising Moon (a beautiful 99% Waxing Gibbous Moon), positioned behind the hill. This will allow us to utilize the tree as a powerful foreground element. We will photograph during golden hour, with the Sun at an elevation of 4º.

We’ll be shooting from nearly 1 km away (0.62 mi), keeping a good distance for the perfect composition.

The Moon will look amazing, shining in beautiful warm colors, with a relative size of 8.6 m (28.2 ft).

Golden hour begins at 7:34 pm, Sunset is at 8:13 pm, golden hour ends at 8:20 pm and blue hour ends at 8:44 pm.

9:00 pm

After an intense day, we return to our luxurious villa for a serene evening. Our personal chef awaits, ready to present his latest culinary creations, promising an exquisite gastronomic journey to perfectly end our day.

10:30 pm

Time to hit the sack and get some proper rest for tomorrow, the Secret Day.

What will it consist of?

Hold on...

You are about to find out! ;)

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Poggio Covili.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour from a Tuscan hilltop.
  • Moon alignment with a solitary oak tree (if clear skies).

Day 6. Friday, May 1st - The Secret

I’ve been giving you lots of details of this amazing expedition to Tuscany.

Maybe far too many...

But on May 1st we’ll do something very special...

What will that be?

Well, you'll have to be there, with us, to figure it out :P

Day 7. Saturday, May 2nd - The Farewell

4:00 am

Morning!

I can't believe this is our last day of the trip.

Time flies!

Grab your gear and let’s make the most of it!

5:15 am

In today's session, we will capture the historic town of Montalcino silhouetted against the setting Moon, positioned from a tranquil viewpoint.

Atop a hill, the medieval town's towers and fortress walls punctuate the rolling Tuscan landscape.

We aim to align the expansive Moon behind Montalcino with a telephoto lens, creating a compressed scene where the Moon dominates. As the Moon sets, we'll adjust our position to fine-tune its placement behind architectural features, ensuring a balanced composition. Twilight's gentle light will capture detail and mood in one frame.

This shot is going to be the cherry on cake.

We are quite far from the subject: 10.6 km (6.59 mi). The Moon looks huge, with a relative size of 91.4 m (300 ft). The early golden hour (-3.97º Sun elevation) fills the scene with both subtle and beautiful warm tones.

Blue hour begins at 5:35 am, golden hour begins at 5:47 am, Moonset is at 5:57 am, Sunrise is at 6:05 am and golden hour ends at 6:45 am.

8:00 am

At the villa, breakfast is ready and waiting.

You can smell the coffee and fresh pastries in the air, bringing a cozy sense of nostalgia. It’s the last morning in Tuscany, and the place is filled with laughter and shared memories.

9:45 am

Our expedition wraps up with a drive to Florence, the last stop on our adventure. As we cruise along, it’s like watching a slideshow of everywhere we've been, the moments we've shared, and all the memories we've made along the way.

11:35 am

As we pull up to Florence airport, it’s time to say our goodbyes. This isn’t just the end of a trip; it’s about sending each other off with full hearts, packed with gratitude and unforgettable memories.

Over these past seven days, we haven’t just explored the beautiful Tuscan countryside, we’ve uncovered a bit of the artist in each of us. From those peaceful blue hours to the warm glow of golden hours, from the Sun and Moon alignments to the cypress-lined roads, every shot we took shows off the beauty of this place and the friendships we’ve built.

As we go our separate ways, just remember: while this adventure might be over, the journey of exploring and creating never really stops. Here’s to the amazing sights we’ve seen, the moments we’ve captured, and all the new horizons waiting for us.

Until we meet again, arrivederci and safe travels!

This is a glimpse of what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland... But we had so many adventures and it was so much fun... We can’t wait for Tuscany, Italy!

But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!

Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.

Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
