We’ll stay in a luxury private villa located among the most beautiful hills of Tuscany...

With a private Italian chef preparing delicious meals everyday!

We’re recruiting 12 brave PhotoPillers (PhotoPills and photography nerds) to join us on a 7-day expedition to photograph Tuscany’s beautiful spring colors, the golden light, the Sun and the Moon along with the essence of this enchanting Italian paradise.

This is an adventure to chase legendary photos and you are a key asset!

We have lots of legendary photos planned already... Including 3 Sun and 2 Moon alignments ;)

And we’ll travel a few kilometers to capture them...

But we also want to maximize our flexibility in terms of itinerary and schedule in order to take advantage of all the opportunities that the changing weather will surely put in our way.

If we see something interesting happening in the sky, we’ll pick the best location possible, stop and take advantage of the occasion.

Day 1. Sunday, May 16th - Welcome to Tuscany

It’s early Sunday afternoon...

And you land in Florence (FLR), the capital of the Tuscan region, in Italy.

However, I suggest you arrive the day before to have an extra day to decompress and enjoy Florence’s culture, Renaissance art and architecture... like the magnificent Duomo Cathedral, with its impressive red dome dominating the city’s skyline.

Tuscany is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, ancient farmhouses, and the unique soft light that has captivated artists for centuries.

After picking you up at the airport we’ll drive directly to our private “podere”: an idyllic villa perched upon the hills of the beautiful Tuscan countryside overlooking the picturesque landscape of Val d’Orcia.

The word “podere” is quintessentially Tuscan, often referring to a farmhouse or estate.

This will be our basecamp for the entire week.

After settling into our rooms, we will gather for some local delicacies: delightful cakes and refreshing beverages. Welcome to the heart of Tuscany!

Ramiro and Neil will go over the expedition itinerary, logistics, equipment and safety instructions for the week.

It’s also time to get to know each other a bit more and answer all your questions.

Since light won't wait for us...

As the day turns to dusk, we'll make our way to the hills just south of San Quirico d'Orcia.

Here, nestled within this picturesque setting, we have two distinct and equally breathtaking spots to photograph, each offering a unique perspective on the Tuscan landscape.

First, we'll find a magnificent vantage point offering a sweeping view of Pienza, which will glow in the distance. The Sun's gentle side light will exquisitely highlight the textures and layers of nearby hills, creating depth and dimension in the Tuscan countryside.

Next, we'll photograph the iconic Podere Belvedere, utilizing backlight to silhouette the farmhouse and cypress trees. This technique will create a dramatic, artistic portrayal, outlining their forms with a luminous rim that separates them from the background.

As the Sun starts to set, stretching out shadows and filling the scene with a soft, golden light, we arrive at our Sunset spot by the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.

This famous little church, standing alone in the middle of wide, open fields, perfectly captures the peaceful beauty and timeless feel the area is known for.

Now, we get to decide... Do we snap a shot of the church glowing in the Sunset's backlight, or focus on its lovely front?

After a long day of exploring the countryside and hunting for the perfect photo, we finally head back to the villa.

As soon as we pull up, the mouthwatering smell from the kitchen hits us, a clear sign that dinner’s about to start... and we’ve definitely earned it!

Tonight’s menu, crafted by a local chef, is full of Tuscan dishes, letting us dive into the amazing flavors of the region.

The meals switch up every day, offering a mix of Italian favorites and international bites.

Our first day in Tuscany isn’t just about capturing great photos; it’s about soaking in the vibe of the place, learning a bit of its history, tasting the amazing food, and really living in the moment.

Time to call it off... Tomorrow, we’re off to capture those famous cypress trees!

Day 2. Monday, May 17th - The Heart of Tuscany

Tucked under the bridge, we find the perfect spot to catch the Sunrise. It’s called Boschetto dei Cipressi. If we’re lucky, the sky will start to light up with an amazing mix of colors.

Standing there, looking out over the rolling Tuscan hills, the cypress trees off in the distance seem to call us. We’ll play around with our camera shots: maybe framing some wildflowers in the front, or just waiting for that first golden Sunlight to hit the horizon.

Over a delicious breakfast back at the villa, we chat about what we've been up to, swap stories about our photos, and get pumped up for the fun that’s still to come.

After a 40-minute drive we arrive at the historical charm of Siena.

Here, we have some free time, allowing you to explore the city's cobblestone streets, marvel at its medieval architecture, and absorb its age-old allure.

It’s the perfect time to improve your urban photography skills!

Our next stop is going to be something special. As we make our way to the spot, the scenery really starts to open up...

There’s a charming farm sitting on a lovely hill, surrounded by those classic rolling hills you see all around this region.

The view is especially magical when the Sun peeks through the scattered clouds, creating little pockets of light that dance across the hills. That wonderful light makes the fields pop, with soft shadows and highlights that bring the whole scene to life.

We’re timing our visit for when the Sun’s still pretty high, so we can catch that soft light coming from behind and to the left. This kind of side lighting will make the textures of the hills stand out more, giving the whole scene a nice sense of depth.

Depending on the conditions, we’ve got two ways to go: we can go wide to capture the whole farm and its surroundings for that epic landscape shot, or we can zoom in and focus on the key details, like the farm and the gentle curves of the hills.

After a short drive, we arrive in this beautiful spot: rows of cypress trees with Siena's outline in the background. The whole landscape is glowing in the Sunset.

The way the land stretches out calls for some zoomed-in shots, so we set up our tripods nice and high to make sure we get the whole view just right.

Day 3. Tuesday, May 18th - The Golden Mist and the Gladiator

Today we’re heading to one of the most iconic places in the region.

In the heart of Tuscany, you'll find a landscape that's like a work of art. Every hill, every tree, every villa has its own story to tell. By day three of our trip, we’re diving deeper into those stories, trying to capture more than just the sights.

We're after the true spirit of this place, and that’s what we’ll try to accomplish during the early morning at our special location.

Podere Belvedere, with its cozy, rustic vibe, is a spot that stands out. Tucked between rolling fields, it gives you a perfect view of classic Tuscan villas, all wrapped in the soft, swirling morning mist.

As we settle in, the magic of the place really starts to show. During the blue hour, the villas have this dreamy glow, with their windows reflecting the last bits of night. But when the golden hour kicks in, the whole scene sharpens up, showing off every detail, from the terracotta rooftops to the rich green fields spread out below.

Back at the villa, the mouthwatering smell of breakfast is everywhere. It’s the perfect way to get ready for what’s sure to be an exciting day. Afterwards, there will be some time to relax and catch up on some (well deserved) sleep.

We’ll spend the afternoon heading south of San Quirico (part of the gorgeous UNESCO world heritage site Val d’Orcia). Huge fields stretch out in neat, almost perfect patterns carved by the plows and time, with a few trees here and there, standing out against the green backdrop.

The gentle hills create a feeling of calm and wide open space, and it's in this peaceful setting that you’ll find some of the most beautiful, stand-alone trees.

There’s this one tree standing alone between two hills. From where we're shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer's eye right to our subject. Their colors will change depending on what crops are growing at the time, giving us a variety of shades that add depth and make for more interesting shots.

Next is the area south of Pienza, where the hills have a peaceful, almost lonely vibe. The trees stand apart, each one unique, set against a vast, open space.

We're going to take a landscape shot from this little elevated spot, looking south over the rolling hills. The plan is to focus on the two trees that stand perfectly in the middle of the scene, with a farm framed by cypress trees in the background.

From where we’re shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer’s eye straight to our subject. The colors will totally depend on whatever crops are growing at the moment, so each hill might end up looking different from the others. This adds depth and makes our composition feel more lively and interesting.

As we stroll into Pienza, you can really feel the mix of culture and food. The cobblestone streets, old Renaissance buildings, and lively piazzas all have their own stories to tell.

We make a stop at Gelateria Buon Gusto, where the flavors are packed with that classic Italian charm, making our visit even sweeter.

As the evening rolls in, Podere Terrapille is ready to welcome you.

If you've seen the movie “Gladiator”, you’ll recognize this path: it’s the one surrounded by golden wheat fields swaying in the breeze, with tall cypress trees lining the way. At the end of it all, there's a villa standing quietly, full of old memories.

In the distance, the mountains catch the last bit of Sunlight, making the view even more breathtaking.

To get to our position we have an easy to moderate 10-minute hike ahead of us. The path involves a significant descent: a 60-meter drop in elevation over a short, 369-meter stretch. Although the primarily sand composition offers an easy surface, the steep incline makes the return harder.

Day 4. Wednesday, May 19 - The Alignments

We have planned a Sun alignment for this morning,

From a tranquil Tuscan hill, we overlook an elegant grove 800 m away (0.5 mi) with an unobstructed view and rolling landscape.

For Sunrise, we align to capture the Sun rising directly behind the sparsely treed grove, filtering golden light through the trunks. With fog, this creates a magical display of light beams and warm, pulsing horizon.

In these conditions, the grove transforms into layered silhouettes, bathed in diffused light. The composition excels when the grove is placed slightly off-center, allowing the frame to breathe, the fog to move, and the light and mood to develop.

7:15 am

After capturing the golden Tuscan light at Sunrise, we take a break to enjoy a well-earned breakfast followed by some time to relax.

Time for a lunch experience at the villa, featuring the culinary artistry of our acclaimed pizzaiolo.

Savor authentic Italian pizzas, freshly prepared and baked to perfection, showcasing the finest local ingredients.

After this exquisite meal, guests can unwind with a leisurely stroll or relax at the villa.

Time for an interesting post-processing class with Ramiro and Neil. We'll review our captures, discuss composition choices, and explore editing techniques to bring out the full potential of our work. It’s a hands-on session designed to refine your vision and take your images to the next level.

Our journey explores a tranquil, lesser-known part of Tuscany with equally breathtaking scenery.

We will drive winding roads through picturesque countryside, revealing spectacular vistas of rolling hills, fields, and iconic cypress trees.

A highlight is navigating a stretch of the legendary Eroica road, famous for its historic white gravel and hosting the L'Eroica vintage bicycle race amidst this stunning rural landscape.

We seek beautiful skies with puffy clouds and dramatic light shafts to enhance the depth and texture of the rolling hills. This dynamic lighting transforms the landscape into an stunning scene.

We’ll have our second alignment of the day. This time, the almost full Moon (99.4%) will take center stage in our narrative.

Get ready for an epic shot at the iconic Chapel of Vitaleta!

We've crunched the numbers and it's a beauty: the Moon will be perfectly aligned, appearing a mighty 6.4 meters in size from our shooting spot 725 m away (0.45 miles).

The best part? This celestial alignment happens right in the middle of the Golden Hour, bathing the entire scene in that magical, warm ambient light.

The Sunrise light gives the landscape a whole new vibe.

When you think of Tuscany, one of the first images that pops into your head is probably a dirt road lined with cypress trees. And now it’s time to chase it.

So, we set off along the scenic road, heading toward those tall cypress trees, patiently waiting to be framed through our lenses.

The early morning mist clings to the rolling hills, softening the edges of the iconic winding road.

As the Sun begins to peek through, it illuminates the elegant rows of cypress trees.

This is the moment to capture the serene beauty of the Tuscan landscape, with the light transforming the fog into a golden glow, highlighting the timeless allure of this famous vista.

Back at the villa for some breakfast and to relax afterwards.

As the day goes on, we'll make our way to the hills just south of San Quirico d'Orcia.

There, we'll find two lone cypress trees standing proudly against the rolling hills.

Grab your telephoto lens and have fun experimenting with the composition. Try centering the trees or playing with off-balance shots, always aiming for that perfect harmony.

And if there are clouds, why don’t you include them in your shot?

Our next stop is just a quick drive down the road, where two majestic oak trees are waiting for us.

Their twisted branches and sprawling canopies offer a different texture and mood.

For a stunning shot, try using a wide-angle lens to capture their elegance, or switch to a longer focal length to highlight all the unique details and character of each tree.

Just a short drive away, the iconic Croce di Prata awaits.

This elevated position provides a sweeping panorama of rolling hills, meticulously cultivated fields, and scattered farmhouses, all bathed in the warm, late afternoon light.

The cross itself, a simple yet powerful focal point.

This spot is perfect for capturing the vastness and serene beauty of Tuscany, with its subtle variations in color and texture that unfold across the expansive vista.

After a short stop in Pienza, just long enough to grab a delicious ice cream, we arrive at our next location. It's perfect for the Sun alignment we have planned and for practicing what we've learned about PhotoPills!

There are unobstructed views of Pienza in the distance.

Our shot focuses on the 37-meter (121-foot) bell tower, aiming for the setting Sun to align directly behind or beside it for a dramatic silhouette. From our shooting location (about 3.2 km, 2 mi), the relative size of the Sun will be 30 m (98.43 ft). We'll frame the shot to capture the Sun either touching, resting behind, or partially concealed by the tower, creating a captivating glowing outline.

Day 7. Saturday, May 22nd - The Farewell

In today's session, we will capture an area close to Villa Podere Maiano, which by now already feels like home

The classic Tuscan landscape unfolds with rolling hills, a tapestry of various crops, and scattered trees, offering a rich variety of textures and natural elements.

The Sunrise, positioned ahead and slightly to the left, will cast a soft, golden side light. This illumination will gently warm the scene, adding depth to the hills and valleys.

We will photograph a solitary tree on a hilltop for minimalistic compositions, using the sky as negative space to highlight its form. Later, with higher sun, we'll focus on neighboring trees, employing sunburst techniques and light through branches for drama. Telephoto shots of the valleys may reveal details like farmhouses or layered hills in the morning light.

And lastly, since the Moon will be setting, we might as well take some photos. Framing the Moon's final moments using iconic Tuscan elements, like a cypress or rolling hill, will be the perfect icing on the cake for such a memorable expedition.

What’s the temperature in Tuscany in May?

Tuscany, located in central Italy, experiences a Mediterranean climate, with variations due to its diverse topography. In May spring is in full bloom in Tuscany.

Typically, during this period, you can expect:

Daytime temperatures: Ranging from 15ºC (59ºF) to 25ºC (77ºF).
Nighttime temperatures: Typically between 8ºC (46ºF) to 15ºC (59ºF).

The weather can be quite pleasant, with longer days and abundant spring flowers. However, there might be occasional rain showers, so it's a good idea to be prepared with some light rain gear.

What do you recommend I bring along for the expedition?

Your sense of adventure and fun, your camera and your sense of humor, of course.

Besides that? When you book your seat, we’ll send you an Information Package that will give you further details and suggestions about what to bring (gear, clothing, etc.).

Is travel insurance included in the price of the expedition?

No. Participants are recommended to purchase national or international medical and travel insurance coverage.

Also, we recommend you to choose a travel insurance that:

• Covers trip cancellation costs.
• Covers Covid-19 health, travel and cancellation costs.

What is the cancellation policy?

We hope you don’t need to cancel your spot, but if a situation arises where you don’t have a choice, our cancellation policy is the following.

If you choose not to join the Expedition, a cancellation fee may apply. This fee will be equivalent to the cost of the Expedition, minus any savings or additional income we generate
if we’re able to fill your spot with another participant.

If we’re able to fill your spot, we’ll refund the payments you’ve made, deducting a €300 administrative fee and any non-refundable costs retained by our travel partners.

However, if there are unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances at the destination or nearby that significantly affect the execution of the Expedition or the transportation of passengers to the destination, no penalty will be applied, and we will refund all payments you have made toward the Expedition.

Refunds will be paid by the same method that the original payment was made.
