The Adventure
12 PhotoPillers | 2 PhotoPills Masters | Spain (North) | Endless legendary photos

Warning! This is not a honeymoon (or a beach holiday)... But it’s not a bootcamp either.
We’re recruiting 12 brave PhotoPillers (PhotoPills and photography nerds) to join us on a 7-day expedition to photograph the Total Solar Eclipse, the Milky Way, the Perseids Meteor Shower and Summer’s Golden Light along with some of the gems hidden in the dramatic coastlines of Northern Spain.
But this trip is about more than just a celestial event.
It’s about light. Landscape. And the thrill of photographing a region where mountains crash into sea, lighthouses cling to cliffs, and the sky never stops putting on a show.
From the Basque Country to Asturias, we’ll chase golden light across jagged capes, misty beaches, medieval villages, and the rolling green hills that make this corner of Spain so wildly photogenic. Add in the Milky Way, the Perseids meteor shower, and endless moody skies, and you've got the ingredients for a week packed with stories worth capturing.
And then... there’s the big one.
On August 12, the Moon will slide in front of the Sun and plunge everything into a surreal, golden hour twilight. We’ll be there, cameras ready, perfectly positioned to photograph totality as it arcs low in the sky over the northern coast, with the Atlantic as our stage.
We’ll scout the perfect vantage point based on the weather and light: somewhere dramatic, remote, and unforgettable. And when the light dims and the stars appear in the middle of the day, you’ll know this isn’t just another photo trip.
But that's just the beginning...
By day, we’ll explore the rugged coastline of Northern Spain (wind-carved cliffs, historic hermitages, wild beaches, and centuries-old stone villages) chasing the warm glow of Sunrise and Sunset across land and sea.
By night, we’ll dive headfirst into a galactic playground: the Milky Way, the Perseids Meteor Shower, and skies so dark they’ll make your jaw drop.
It’s a PhotoPills-style adventure, crafted for those who live to chase the rare, the wild, and the beautiful.
You’re about to embark on a PhotoPills’ style journey. And it’s not going to be a honeymoon precisely... :P
You’ll be a true PhotoPiller!
Are you in?
Day 1. Sunday, August 9th - Welcome to Spain

1:00 pm
It’s Sunday afternoon...
And you land at Bilbao Airport (BIO), where it all begins.
2:30 pm
Once we pick you up from the airport (or your accommodation if you decided to arrive a day earlier), we’ll head straight to Hotel Hesperia Bilbao, where we’ll spend the night.
3:00 pm
There’s time to settle in, shake off the travel, and get ready for what’s ahead.
You’ll meet other PhotoPillers and the Masters. Marco Grassi, Jabi Sanz and the other PhotoPillers will be there.
4:00 pm
We gather for a PhotoPills-style briefing: an intro to the expedition, the game plan for the week.
5:00 pm
And now it’s time for a PhotoPills class to get you fully dialed in with the tools, settings, and mindset you’ll need to shoot the eclipse and everything around it. Whether you're new to PhotoPills or already fluent in planning wizardry, this session will sharpen your eye and prep your brain for what’s coming.
6:15 pm
Dinner at the hotel, fueling up for what’s next.
Because tonight, we hit the coast.
7:15 pm
Just before Sunset, we drive out to one of the Basque Country’s most jaw-dropping coastal gems: Barrika Beach.
8:15 pm
This place is a geological wonder. It features otherworldly rock formations called “flysch”: sharp, linear, layered slabs that look like the spine of a sleeping sea dragon.
The lines stretch from land to sea, creating built-in leading lines that guide your frame straight to the Atlantic horizon.
This is the perfect chance to pull out the PhotoPills Planner and use the Augmented Reality view to map out the best spot for our Sunset shot:

As the Sun dips low, warm golden light grazes the rocks, revealing textures you didn’t know existed. The sky catches fire (orange, pink, and deep violet) and the beach becomes a surreal playground of light, shadow, and reflection.
We’ll shoot long exposures to smooth the waves, or go handheld and catch the motion and power of the surf. Pools of water nestled in the rocks act like natural mirrors adding depth, symmetry, and just the right touch of magic.
Golden hour begins at 8:43 pm, Sunset is at 9:24 pm, golden hour ends at 9:43 pm and blue hour ends at 9:55 pm.

10:00 pm
As twilight fades into blue hour, we pack up and return to Bilbao, tired but buzzing.
10:50 pm
And just like that your first day ends with boots in the sand, camera in hand, and the ocean whispering that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Photographic pills:
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Playa de Barrika.
Day 2. Monday, August 10th - The Church and the Sea Stacks

4:15 am
Wake up! Today starts before the birds, and we’re diving straight into legend.
5:30 am
We leave under the stars and head to one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
Perched high on a rocky islet, connected to the mainland by a winding stone footbridge, and crowned by the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, this dramatic location feels like it was carved from a fantasy novel. (No surprise that it starred as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones.)
6:10 am
We arrive just as the world begins to breathe. The soft hues of dawn creep across the horizon, casting delicate light on the ocean and cliffs below.
From our elevated viewpoint, we’ll capture the serpentine path leading to the chapel: an image that feels as mythical as the place itself.
Want more drama? From lower angles, we’ll emphasize the textures of the bridge, the towering cliffs, and the sea below, where crashing waves or glistening tide pools add rhythm to your frame.
Blue hour begins at 6:38 am, golden hour begins at 6:51 am, Sunrise is at 7:10 am and golden hour ends at 7:50 am.

8:45 am
Once the Sun is fully up and the light turns harsh, we make our way back to Bilbao for breakfast, a short rest, and checkout.
11:30 am
Then we hit the road west again, enjoying a scenic drive through rolling hills and along the Cantabrian coast.
1:00 pm
We’ll stop for lunch in Santander, before checking in at the elegant Hotel Bahía de Santander, our base for the night.
But don’t get too cozy...
This afternoon, we get down to eclipse business.
4:30 pm
We gather for a focused class on how to shoot the total solar eclipse.
From planning and gear to timing and technique, we’re giving you everything you need to capture totality like a pro.
No guesswork. No panic. Just confidence, readiness, and a killer game plan.
6:00 pm
Then it’s time to gear up for the night.
We make a pit stop at the grocery store to stock up on supplies for a field dinner because this evening, we’re trading restaurants for sea cliffs, wind, and stars.
6:45 pm
Our destination? Playa de Portio, near Los Urros – a place where massive sea stacks rise from the waves like ancient sentinels, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and endless Atlantic views.
7:00 pm

We arrive just before golden hour and make our way up to a series of clifftop viewpoints.
The light begins to shift. The Sun dips low, grazing the rocks, and setting the ocean ablaze with color.
This is when the textures pop, the shadows grow long, and every frame becomes a seascape worth framing.
Golden hour begins at 8:46 pm, Sunset is at 9:26 pm, golden hour ends at 9:45 pm and blue hour ends at 9:57 pm.
10:05 pm
After Sunset, we stay put.
As darkness deepens and the sky clears, we enter astro mode.
You’ll set up for star trails, with the sea stacks standing strong against the shifting sky. We’ll track and compose toward the north, capturing long-exposure magic as the stars slowly trace arcs above the roaring sea.
This is the kind of night that sticks with you...
Wind in your hair. Salt on your skin. Shutter open. Heart full.
11:50 pm
We make our way back to the hotel tired, glowing, and one step closer to the eclipse.
Photographic pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Playa de Portio.
Day 3. Tuesday, August 11th - The Rugged Coastline

4:45 am
Gooooood morning PhotoPillers!
Are you ready for another beautiful day full of incredible experiences?
Yeah?
Alright! Get your stuff ready!
5:30 am
We leave the hotel behind before the world wakes, chasing the soft light of dawn along the coast of Cantabria.
Our target?
We’re driving back to Los Urros de Liencres: a rugged stretch of Atlantic coastline where cliffs, sea stacks, and textured rock formations stretch out toward the eastern horizon.
6:10 am
We arrive in that perfect pocket of blue hour calm. The waves roll in. The sky begins to shift.
Then the Sun rises, and the entire scene lights up.
From our vantage point above the cliffs, we’ll shoot east toward Arnia Beach, capturing how the golden light brushes across the jagged layers of stone and tranquil sea.
Use the lines of the coastline to pull the viewer into your frame. And depending on the tide, you’ll either reveal extra textures in the rocks or get smooth, moody waves for long exposures.
It’s a dramatic and peaceful way to begin the day with a camera in hand and the Atlantic whispering below.
Blue hour begins at 6:44 am, golden hour begins at 6:56 am, Sunrise is at 7:16 am and golden hour ends at 7:56 am.

8:50 am
After the session, we head to our hotel in Santander, Hotel Bahía de Santander, for a well-earned breakfast and some time to relax before packing up and rolling west toward Asturias.
12:30 pm
We stop for lunch in Ribadesella, a charming seaside town where the old stone streets wind between colorful facades, ocean views, and a laid-back vibe that’ll make you want to stay forever.
Let’s go for a walk...
1:30 pm
Lunch at a local restaurant in Ribadesella.
3:00 pm
But we’ve got more light to chase, so we drive towards Muros de Nalón.
4:15 pm
By evening, we check into Hotel Villa del Marqués, a perfect little haven to recharge before our second shoot of the day.
7:15 pm
Then, as golden hour approaches, we set off again... This time for one of the prettiest villages in all of Spain: Cudillero.
7:30 pm

Tucked between steep hills, Cudillero rises like an amphitheater around its tiny harbor. White and pastel-colored houses cling to the slope, glowing under the last rays of the Sun.
We’ll shoot from the Mirador de Cimadevilla, a clifftop viewpoint that frames the town like a storybook.
From here, the light spills over terracotta rooftops, casting long shadows and warming every corner of this layered, coastal maze. If we’re lucky, clouds roll in and catch fire, wrapping the village in pink and orange glow.
Want to get creative? There are flowers blooming near the miradores, perfect for foregrounds that add color and depth to your compositions.
Golden hour begins at 8:54 pm, Sunset is at 9:34 pm, golden hour ends at 9:53 pm and blue hour ends at 10:05 pm.
10:10 pm
Once we’ve captured every drop of light, we head down into the harbor for tapas and drinks. The best way to end a day this packed with light, texture, and storytelling!
11:30 pm
And when we finally roll back to the hotel... the memory cards will be full, and the smiles even fuller.
Photographic pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Playa de la Arnía.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Cudillero.
Day 4. Wednesday, August 12th - The Eclipse

5:15 am
Every expedition has its climax.
And today... is that day.
6:00 am
We begin early (before the world stirs) and head out to a place where Sunrise meets stone, and time feels ancient.
Our destination: Playa de Campiechos, one of the most dramatic seascapes in Asturias.
Here, the iconic natural arch known as La Peña de los Enamorados rises above jagged tide pools and volcanic textures, like a portal to another world.
6:45 am
We arrive in the blue hour and scout our compositions using the tide pools and textured foreground as visual guides.
Then, as the Sun crests the horizon, golden light spills across the scene, igniting the rocks and reflecting in the pools. With the tide low, more of this surreal terrain is revealed, offering countless angles and layers.
Go long for soft water. Go wide for drama. Go close for details.
This is just the opening act.
Blue hour begins at 6:55 am, golden hour begins at 7:07 am, Sunrise is at 7:27 am and golden hour ends at 8:06 am.

10:00 am
After breakfast and a short recharge, we start preparing for the main event, the one we’ve been chasing since the very beginning: the total solar eclipse.
1:00 pm
Lunch at the hotel restaurant or somewhere not far away.
Then, let's buy some food to take with us, since we’re having dinner out in the field. The plan is to soak up every moment along that stunning, wild Asturian coast while we’re out there filming the total solar eclipse!
2:30 pm
We’re heading to our Total Solar Eclipse location, a breathtaking cove surrounded by towering cliffs and studded with jagged sea stacks… one of the most striking eclipse-viewing spots.
3:00 pm
We arrive early to claim our spot, scout our compositions, and enjoy a slow afternoon with the sea, the Sun, and each other.
Go for a swim. Grab a nap. Breathe in the anticipation.
6:30 pm
By early evening, it’s game time.
We regroup and review the shooting strategy: filters, intervals, bracketing, corona settings, safety. One last prep session before the sky turns dark.
7:30 pm
At 7:30 pm, the Moon begins its approach: the first bite taken from the Sun.
Then...
8:26 pm

At 8:26 pm, it happens.
Totality.
The light drops. The air stills.
The Sun’s corona flares out in ghostly strands, suspended in the sky above the ocean.
The cliffs fall into silhouette. The sea glows in a surreal dusk.
It’s awe. Pure, wordless awe.
And you’re right there.
Camera in hand. Heart racing. Eyes wide.

9:20 pm
As the light returns and the eclipse fades into memory, we’re not done yet.
The Sun sets soon after, giving us a final burst of warm light on the cliffs and the sea stacks. One of the most poetic conclusions to totality you could ask for.
Golden hour begins at 8:53 pm, Sunset is at 9:33 pm, golden hour ends at 9:52 pm and blue hour ends at 10:04 pm.
10:05 pm
Then, as night settles, we share dinner in the field, passing around bites and stories beneath the stars.
10:50 pm
And if we still have energy (and the skies are clear) we stay.
The Milky Way may not be the star of this night, but a sky filled with stars and the flashing meteors of the Perseids above this jagged coastline is more than enough to leave a mark.
We’ll switch to fast wide-angle lenses, find new compositions with the cliffs and rocks, and let the silence of the beach under the stars carry us into the final frames of this unforgettable day.
It’s not just a shoot.
It’s not just a moment.
It’s a memory carved in light and shadow.
12:50 am
Back at the hotel.
This was the day the Sun disappeared. And you were there to capture it.
Photographic pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Playa de Campiechos.
- Total Solar Eclipse and the Perseids meteor shower in a special location.
Day 5. Thursday, August 13th - The Edge of the Earth

5:00 am
Wake up PhotoPillers!
There’s no easing into this one... We’re up early and diving straight into one of the most surreal landscapes in all of Asturias.
5:45 am
We hit the road before dawn, winding along coastal roads toward a beach that looks like it belongs on another planet: Playa de Gueirúa.
6:40 am
Hidden at the end of a forested trail, this remote pebble beach is home to Los Castros de Gueirúa: jagged sea spires that erupt from the ocean in eerie, cathedral-like formations.
We arrive in the blue hour and begin exploring the shoreline, scouting tide pools, pebbles, and water-carved textures for the perfect foreground.
As the Sun begins to rise, a soft, golden glow washes across the scene... The spires catch the light, casting long shadows and dramatic contrast.
If the tide is low, we’ll get rich detail in the exposed foreground: pools, stones, and reflections that lead the eye straight to the horizon. With a higher tide, we’ll play with motion, using long exposures to transform crashing waves into mist, letting the razor-sharp rocks stand out against a dreamy, flowing sea.
There’s no wrong way to shoot this place. Every composition is a discovery. Every frame is a story.
Blue hour begins at 6:56 am, golden hour begins at 7:08 am, Sunrise is at 7:27 am and golden hour ends at 8:07 am.

9:25 am
Time for breakfast and a well-earned rest back at Hotel Villa del Marqués.
11:00 am
We check out and continue west...
1:30 pm
We stop in Ribadesella for lunch in the old town, another charming gem along Spain’s wild northern coast.
3:30 pm
In the afternoon, we arrive at Hotel Miraolas in Llanes, where we check in and unwind.
4:30 pm
Let’s regroup for a PhotoPills-style post-processing class.
We’ll walk through editing techniques to help you make the most of your shots: balancing light, enhancing contrast, and dialing in the mood to match the moment.
6:30 pm
We’re back into adventure mode!
7:05 pm
After a quick stop to pick up dinner in the field, we head to one of the most dramatic Sunset spots on the Asturian coast: Mirador Olianco, perched above the so-called “Cliffs of Hell”.
Don’t let the name scare you! It’s breathtaking up there...
7:30 pm

The views stretch wide over jagged cliffs, crashing waves, and the deep blue of the Cantabrian Sea.
The star of the show? A massive sea arch and outcrop carved by centuries of Atlantic fury, standing proudly against the setting Sun.
We’ll arrive early to scout the best vantage points.
The light will evolve constantly starting soft and golden, then deepening into rich oranges and reds as the Sun sinks low. From a slightly elevated perspective, we can compose using the dramatic cliff lines as foreground, leading the eye toward the arch, sea stack, and open ocean beyond.
If the skies play along, we might even catch sunbursts peeking through the rock formations or fiery skies wrapping the scene in pure atmosphere.
Dinner will be casual. Just us, a cliffside picnic, and cameras ready as the final light disappears.
It’s the kind of Sunset that sticks with you long after the shutter clicks.
Golden hour begins at 8:46 pm, Sunset is at 9:26 pm, golden hour ends at 9:45 pm and blue hour ends at 9:57 pm.
11:05 pm
What a day!
We finally make it to our rooms, exhausted but smiling, thinking about all the moments we lived and the awesome shots we took.
Get some good rest, my friends.
Tomorrow is the Secret day!
Photographic pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Playa de Gueírua.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Mirador Olianco.
Day 6. Friday, August 14th - The Secret

I’ve been giving you lots of details of this amazing expedition to the north of Spain.
Maybe far too many...
But on August 14th we’ll do something very special...
What will that be?
Well, you'll have to be there, with us, to figure it out :P
Day 7. Saturday, August 15th - The Farewell

5:25 am
One last early wake-up call... but trust me, it’s worth it.
6:50 am
We end this journey exactly how it began: chasing light on the edge of the Earth.
Before breakfast, before check-out, before the farewell hugs, we head out one last time to greet the Atlantic Sunrise at one of Asturias’ most unique coastal wonders: The Bufones de Pría.
These natural blowholes, carved into the limestone cliffs, are a raw expression of the sea’s power.
When the tide is high or the waves are wild, jets of sea spray shoot skyward, exploding through the fissures with a sound like thunder. Even when the sea is calm, the cliff textures and sweeping views make this place worth every step.
We’ll arrive in the pre-dawn quiet, walking across rugged fields toward the coastline as the sky begins to shift. The Sun rises hidden behind cliffs, and then, gradually, light begins to spill across the landscape illuminating rock, sea, and sky in a soft golden wash.
We’ll set up near the active bufones, watching and waiting for the right moment... when sea and Sun align, and the energy of the coast leaps into the air. Even without the geysers firing, the sharp cliff edges, distant hills, and sculpted coastline give us all the tools we need for strong, dramatic compositions.
One final shoot. One more morning filled with motion, light, and ocean air.
Blue hour begins at 6:53 am, golden hour begins at 7:06 am, Sunrise is at 7:25 am and golden hour ends at 8:04 am.

8:20 am
Time to head back. We take one last look, breathe it in, and walk back to the van.
9:00 am
Back at Hotel Miraolas for breakfast and for the last round of packing.
10:50 am
Check-out. One last ride takes us to Bilbao Airport, back to reality.
The expedition is coming to an end. But let’s be honest, this kind of trip never really leaves you.
From the jagged seascapes of Barrika to the glowing rooftops of Cudillero, the towering cliffs of Asturias, and the unforgettable eclipse hanging over Spain’s northern sky... we’ve captured more than just images.
We’ve captured moments, stories written in light, texture, and time.
Thank you for being part of this journey. For every laugh, every climb, every shared Sunrise.
We came here as photographers.
Here’s to the light, the journey, and whatever comes next.
See you out there.

Do you want an example of how huge this will be?
This is a glimpse to what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland in 2016. We had so many adventures and so much fun... We can’t wait for the Total Solar Eclipse in Northern Spain in 2026!
But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!
Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.
Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
