Driving a 4x4 and bridging tents to set out on our own adventure!

Remote campsites are scattered across the country, offering amazing spots to rest, cook meals together, and share stories under the stars. As we journey from south to north along the untouched Skeleton Coast, our Camp Master will set up camp, and we’ll spend the night under pristine, star-filled skies...

But keep in mind – this is a real Expedition, not a rigid tour with a fixed itinerary.
Unexpected detours, weather changes, and spontaneous discoveries are all part of the journey.
While we have a planned route, each day may bring surprises, and flexibility is key. This isn’t about rushing from one place to the next; it’s about embracing the adventure as it unfolds.
This trip is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and doesn’t mind getting a little dusty. It’s all about freedom, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Add in a few cultural experiences, and you’ve got the perfect balance of thrill and relaxation.

The desert is waiting, and this adventure is going to be one for the books!
8:30 am

Buckle up – our Skeleton Coast Odyssey begins now!
An incredible adventure from Windhoek to the remote Kunene mouth...
At the border with Angola!
For the next 10 days, we’re setting off on an unforgettable journey through one of the most untouched and breathtaking places on Earth...
This remote coastline is a stunning mix of raw beauty and fascinating history, where rugged landscapes meet the mysteries of shipwrecks and shifting dunes.
It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left...
This self-drive safari along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is not just a road trip...
It’s an expedition into one of the most remote, wild, and surreal landscapes on the planet.
The Skeleton Coast is one of the most untouched places in the world.
You’ll drive through vast, desolate landscapes where towering dunes meet the roaring Atlantic Ocean, and it often feels like you’re the last person on Earth.
No crowds, no traffic... Just pure, wild freedom...

Along the way we’ll make some encounters that will make unique and authentic photo opportunities...
Scattered along the foggy shores are the rusting carcasses of ships that met their doom here, giving the coastline its eerie and legendary reputation. Driving past these ghostly wrecks is like stepping into a maritime mystery book.
Despite the harsh environment, wildlife thrives. You might spot desert-adapted elephants, lions, and even brown hyenas roaming the dunes, while thousands of Cape fur seals gather at places like Cape Cross.

It’s a safari like no other – raw, rugged, and unpredictable!
And of course, all this will happen in ever-changing, surreal landscapes...
From vast gravel plains to towering dunes plunging straight into the sea, the scenery shifts constantly.
The Skeleton Coast has an almost alien beauty... Otherworldly, haunting, and utterly mesmerizing...
You’ll experience the thrill of true adventure!
And you’ll capture all the photos that you imagined in your wildest dreams!

Driving here requires a spirit of adventure.
There are no gas stations for miles, no easy roadside cafés... Just us, our 4x4 vehicles, and the wild.
Navigating through shifting sands, riverbeds, and salt pans makes every mile feel like a triumph.
It’s a journey of solitude, wonder, and raw nature. Perfect for those who crave the thrill of the unknown.
We’re heading into a place that feels almost from another planet... Massive dunes stretching endlessly, remote campsites where it’s just us and the wild, and a coastline hiding secrets that few ever get to see.

At night, get ready for a sky like no other.
With some of the clearest, darkest skies on the planet, it’s a dream for astrophotography.
You won’t just be looking up; you’ll be capturing something truly special.
Including the Himba people (if we can find them)!

The Himba people are a fascinating semi-nomadic group with deep-rooted traditions. One of their most striking customs is the use of otjize, a special mix of butter, fat, and red ochre that Himba women apply to their skin and hair. It gives them a beautiful reddish glow while also shielding them from the harsh desert Sun.
Their fashion is just as unique... Women wear calfskin skirts and stunning jewelry made of shells, iron, and copper. Their elaborate hairstyles, often coated in otjize, reveal their age and social status.
Livestock, especially cattle and goats, are the backbone of their culture. Their society is structured around both their mother’s and father’s clans, which shapes everything from inheritance to marriage.
Even with outside influences creeping in, the Himba hold tightly to their traditions, staying true to their heritage and way of life.
And if they give us permission, we’ll photograph them under the stars... And under the impressive and shining Milky Way...

Every morning, we’ll chase the first light of day as it spills over the dunes, painting the landscape in warm, golden hues.
And every evening, we’ll witness jaw-dropping Sunsets, where the sky ignites with surreal colors, casting long shadows across the endless desert.

During the day, there’s no shortage of adventure.
We’ll be on the lookout for wildlife, stumbling upon eerie shipwrecks, and taking photos in places most photographers never even get the chance to visit.

What makes this trip really stand out? It’s the rare opportunity to document a place that still feels untouched, like stepping into a story waiting to be told.
Every shot you take will be part of something bigger, something few have seen, let alone photographed.
This landscape is wild and unpredictable, so plans will stay flexible.
But one thing’s for sure...
It’s going to be an adventure you’ll never forget!

And after an exhilarating day of exploration, we’ll arrive at our remote campsite – our home under the stars.
As the first stars appear in the pitch black sky, we’ll gather around a crackling bonfire, the air filled with the rich aroma of a meal prepared by our Camp Master.
Close your eyes. The image of a warm, hearty dinner, surrounded by untouched wilderness, with nothing but the sound of the wind and the distant calls of nocturnal wildlife comes to your mind...
Stories will be shared, laughter will echo into the night, and as the flames dance, we’ll weave tales of the legendary Skeleton Coast – of lost sailors, shifting sands, and the secrets hidden within this land of mystery.

And above us?
One of the darkest, clearest night skies on Earth.
A sky so full of stars that it feels infinite.
A sky where the Milky Way stretches across the horizon, waiting to be captured in all its glory.
After all, what better way to end an unforgettable day than photographing the cosmos, with the ghostly dunes as our foreground and the universe as our backdrop?
This is why we’re here.
This is what makes this journey truly legendary.
And tomorrow, we’ll wake up to do it all over again...
Are you ready?
Photographic Pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour in the Skeleton Coast.
- Midday shots in the Namib Desert.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour in the Skeleton Coast.
- Milky Way and Star Trails in the Skeleton Coast.
Day 13. Monday, September 22nd - The Majestic Spitzkoppe

5:30 am
Rise and shine PhotoPillers!
As we’ve been doing throughout the Expedition, there’s an optional Sunrise shooting session that you can join if you have the energy for it.
Today we’ll try and do some driving to see if we spot some desert elephants...
Blue hour begins at 6:28 am, golden hour begins at 6:37 am, Sunrise is at 6:51 am and golden hour ends at 7:20 am.
7:00 am
Alright, we’re back at the camp to have breakfast.
You should have all your gear and stuff packed up by now.
7:45 am
Let’s dive into the adventure! Today, we’re heading south to explore Spitzkoppe.
Standing tall at 1,728 m (5,600 ft), Spitzkoppe is a true Namibian gem. This incredible rock formation rises out of the Namib Desert, nestled between Swakopmund and Usakos. Its unique shape has even earned it the nickname “Africa’s Matterhorn.”
There’s so much more to Spitzkoppe than meets the eye. It’s full of hidden wonders just waiting to be uncovered.
And we have lots of cool legendary photos planned...
Plan & pray!
1:45 pm

After having lunch along the way, we finally get to the heart of the Grosse and Kleine Spitzkoppe mountains.
These two mountains are super important for getting a glimpse into how hunter-gatherer communities managed to live and thrive in the area way before livestock showed up, like a thousand years ago. There’s even evidence of this at more than 40 rock-art sites, which is pretty incredible.
But it’s not just about the history – it goes deeper than that. The whole area holds a lot of cultural and spiritual significance, which is why the Spitzkoppe is such a cherished heritage site for Namibians.
We’ve really picked the perfect spot to stay.
After our Camp Master organizes a few things here and there, we can chill out and relax for a while.
5:45 pm

It’s time to do a little exploring and scouting.
Not far from our campsite, there’s this amazing natural arch known as “The Bridge” – the perfect subject for your shooting session.
We’ll wander around the area, checking out different angles and shooting spots that’ll be perfect for capturing the Sunset and the Milky Way later on.
This is a great chance to grab your phone and use the Augmented Reality tools in PhotoPills. It’ll help you brainstorm some awesome photo ideas, whether you’re working with natural light, the Sun, the Milky Way, or even Star Trails.
6:45 pm

We’re in the perfect spot, just hanging out and waiting for the Sun to dip below the horizon.
Everything’s set up... Our composition looks amazing with that natural arch framing the Spitzkoppe mountains exactly how we imagined.
Now’s the moment to hit the shutter and capture something truly epic, one of the best shots from this Namibian adventure...
Golden hour begins at 6:27 pm, Sunset is at 6:57 pm, blue hour begins at 7:11 pm and blue hour ends at 7:20 pm.
7:25 pm
We walk back to our camp to enjoy a delicious dinner.
9:05 pm

Alright PhotoPillers, let’s return to the rock arch.
It’s time to take advantage of your previous scouting. So let’s get back to your shooting spots!
The Milky Way dance begins. You’ll notice that its position varies throughout the night: first vertical, then diagonal and finally horizontal.
We’ll spend as much time as we need to photograph our galaxy and its core with the stone bridge.
The astronomical twilight begins at 7:43 pm and the Galactic Center is visible from 8:09 pm until 1:32 am. It's almost the New Moon phase (0.8%).

1:30 am
Off to bed. It feels so good to sleep under the stars!
Photographic pills:
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour with Spitzkoppe and the natural bridge.
- Milky Way and the natural bridge.
Day 14. Tuesday, September 23rd - The Bushman Paintings and the Quiver Tree

5:30 am
Good morning!
Fortunately, there’s a very cool spot near the camp, so it’s not a very long drive.
The incredible Spitzkoppe is waiting for us at Sunrise... And it's going to be amazing.
6:15 am

After a 15-minute drive we get to our destination.
The idea is to start photographing it from a distance, and as we move closer, the views just keep getting better and better.
But before that, there’s something important we need to find: an acacia tree. Well, actually, a few of them.
These trees are perfectly placed for a stunning shot. You can line up one of the smaller acacias right in the center of your view with Spitzkoppe in the background, creating a gorgeous composition or even a panorama.
We’ll wander around a bit to scout out the best spot with the trees, so we’re all set for that magical Sunrise moment.
When the Sun rises, the side light hits everything just right, bringing out the texture, the golden tones, and even a hint of red in the scene. It’s absolutely breathtaking!
Blue hour begins at 6:27 am, golden hour begins at 6:36 am, Sunrise is at 6:50 am and golden hour ends at 7:19 am.

7:40 am
We’re back at our camp for breakfast. Then, you can spend some time resting until our next experience.
10:00 am

We’re visiting the Bushman’s rock paintings.
The Stone Age engravings feature wildlife, symbolic designs, and even mythical creatures. Early hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi herders used the site for worship and rituals, believing it was sacred and filled with ancestral spirits.
As I said, Spitzkoppe hides many secrets. And we’ll spend the morning discovering the hidden ancient art among many other interesting features.
12:30 pm
Back to the camp, where our lunch is ready.
2:00 pm
Now, we can relax for a while.
It’s a beautiful day. And life is good...
5:20 pm

Before Sunset, we head out to a quiet spot where a few Quiver trees are hiding away. It’s only 10 minutes away from our camp.
It's like a little adventure to track them down. Apparently, they’re not super easy to find, but that just makes it more fun when you do!
Here’s a cool little nugget of info: Quiver trees, or Aloidendron dichotomum, are native to South Africa and Namibia.
Even though they’re called "trees", they’re actually giant succulents. That is, a type of aloe that can grow up to 9 m (30 ft) tall. How cool is that?
Our real mission? To capture some amazing Milky Way shots with one of these trees in the frame.
Imagine getting a panorama with the whole Milky Way arching above the tree... Now we’re talking about next-level photography goals, right?
Golden hour begins at 6:28 pm, Sunset is at 6:58 pm, blue hour begins at 7:11 pm and blue hour ends at 7:20 pm.
7:35 pm
Dinner at the camp while we’re waiting for the stars to appear in the sky.
9:05 pm

We’re back at the Quiver tree.
We can’t help but photograph it under the Milky Way one last time. Or maybe you prefer to capture the stars trailing above it?
The astronomical twilight begins at 7:44 pm and the Galactic Center is visible from 8:09 pm until 1:28 am. The thin Moon (3.5%) will be below the horizon.
1:30 am
Bed time!
Tomorrow we’ll have another go at shooting the rock arch before heading back to the capital, Windhoek.
Photographic pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour with Spitzkoppe and an acacia tree.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour with the Quiver tree.
- Milky Way (and Star Trails) and the Quiver tree.
Day 15. Wednesday, September 24th - One Last Sunrise

5:30 am
Time to wake up!
Grab your gear and gather with your fellow PhotoPillers.
We’re heading to our Sunrise location to get the most out of the coming light!
Yes... We’re going back to “The Bridge” to capture it with the morning Sun.
Enjoy our last Sunrise in Namibia!
Blue hour begins at 6:26 am, golden hour begins at 6:35 am, Sunrise is at 6:49 am and golden hour ends at 7:18 am.
7:40 am
We’re back at the camp for breakfast... and to pack everything up.
9:10 am
Once our stomachs are full, it’s time to do a final check to see that everything’s been sorted out and put our bags in the 4x4.
We’re heading south, to Windhoek, since our time together is (almost) coming to an end...
It’s a 3.5-hour drive, so you have time to rest on our way there.
1:10 pm
Arriving in Windhoek, we have lunch at The Weinberg Windhoek, our luxurious final stop.
2:40 pm
We are super hungry so we rush to have lunch before even checking in! :D
Now is the time to do it...
Then, you can take some time to relax and soak in the last moments of this adventure.
6:00 pm
Time for a roundtable session with me, Carel and Jabi!
Make sure to bring your questions, toss out your ideas, and soak up the group's advice. It's an awesome chance to end the trip on a high note and walk away with some useful takeaways.
7:45 pm
We have dinner at the hotel. It’s our last meal together...
But don’t be sad.
It’s the perfect chance to toast the journey we’ve had, the friendships we’ve built, and all the amazing memories we’ve captured.
Let’s make it a celebration to remember!
9:15 pm
Time to go to bed...
Tomorrow, we’ll wrap up this amazing adventure and say goodbye to all the memories we’ve made.
Rest up, PhotoPillers!
Photographic Pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Spitzkoppe.
Day 16. Thursday, September 25th - The Farewell

7:00 am
The last morning’s here, and it’s time to get everything packed up and come together for one final breakfast.
Let’s soak in these moments as a group, holding onto all the incredible memories we’ve made exploring Namibia’s Skeleton Coast.
10:00 am
With hearts full and cameras loaded with memories, we’re off to Windhoek’s airport.
This part is always the toughest – saying goodbye.
But let’s be real, it’s not goodbye forever; it’s more like “see you next time”.
We’ve wandered through jaw-dropping landscapes, shared endless laughs, and snapped more legendary photos than we can count. Along the way, we’ve built connections that go way beyond borders.
Take care of yourselves, my friends. Keep chasing those legendary shots, keep creating magic, and don’t forget – wherever the Milky Way lights up the night, we’ll always be connected under the same stars.
Until we cross paths again, PhotoPillers...
The journey continues, and the adventure never stops!

Do you want an example of how huge this will be?
This is a glimpse to what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland. We had so many adventures and so much fun... We can’t wait for Namibia (Skeleton Coast)!
But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!
Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.
Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
