Day 1. Saturday, January 31st - Welcome to Dubai

It’s Saturday morning, and you land at Dubai International Airport (DXB)... Located at 4.70 km (2.92 mi) east of downtown, it is one of the busiest and most advanced airports in the world.
Dubai is a city like no other, a dazzling blend of futuristic innovation, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, making it an ideal PhotoPills destination.
Its unique Skyline, architecture, culture, urban scenes and desert landscapes are waiting for us...
1:00 pm
After collecting your luggage, take the exit door to the main hall to take your transport to the luxurious Shangri-la Dubai Hotel, our base camp for the first 4 nights.
Standing at a total structural height of 200 m (656 ft), this impressive skyscraper will offer us unparalleled views of the iconic Dubai skyline and the Arabian Gulf, including the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest structure (828 m, 2,716.5 ft), and the vibrant downtown area.
Oh!
And wait to experience breakfast here...
You can’t really describe it in words!
2:30 pm
Expedition briefing and PhotoPills Class.
Andy and Nico will go over the itinerary for the week, explaining the logistics, the locations and the photo opportunities we’ve specially planned for you. They’ll also cover the recommended gear and some important safety instructions.
Then a PhotoPills Class will follow.
So, get ready to learn lots of tips and tricks that will help you plan your photos much faster.
4:30 pm

After a safety briefing, we get to our Sunset spot, located at the emblematic terrace of the Shangri-la Dubai Hotel.
The terrace offers a panoramic view that encompasses a dynamic cityscape, with a bustling traffic junction below and the iconic Burj Khalifa (828 m, 2,716.5 ft) towering majestically in the background.
The Burj Khalifa will be our main subject. And the traffic junction below will add a sense of movement and vibrancy to the scene, contrasting with the serene, towering presence of the world's tallest building.
Open PhotoPills and check the Sunset direction:

As the Sun is setting in the west, the Moon (97,6%) is rising on the east. But the Moon is not our main focus today, she’ll have to wait for its moment of glory to arrive.
We will aim to photograph the changing light as the day progresses, highlighting the transitions from the warm hues of the golden hour to the twinkling lights of the city at night.
As the ambient light decreases, we’ll start to play with different shutter speeds to capture the trails of vehicles in the traffic junction.
Regarding the lens...
- A wide-angle lens will be ideal for encompassing the entire scene, capturing both the traffic junction and the Burj Khalifa in the same frame.
- A telephoto lens will allow us to focus more on the architectural details and the interplay between the city's structures and the dynamic traffic patterns below.
- For night shots, a wide-angle lens with a large aperture will be essential to capture the city lights and the illuminated Burj Khalifa against the night sky.
Golden hour begins at 5:31 pm, Sunset is at 6:03 pm, golden hour ends at 6:17 pm, blue hour ends at 6:26 pm and nighttime begins at 7:21 pm.
7:00 pm
Dinner at the Hotel Shangri-la Dubai.
8:30 pm
Bed time!
Tomorrow we’ll wake up very early to photograph our first Moon alignment :)
Photographic Pills:
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour with Burj Khalifa and traffic junction.
- Night long exposures with Burj Khalifa and traffic junction.
Day 2. Sunday, February 1st - The Moon Alignments

3:35 am
Time to wake up!
Are you ready for an amazing day?
I bet you are!
4:20 pm
Our adventure starts early today as we head out to a carefully selected location deep in the desert.
This remote location aligns perfectly with the Dubai airport airstrip and the setting Moon, offering the perfect distance to create a dramatic visual effect (Moon + Plane).
Here, the Moon appears larger than life (202 m, 662 ft), almost dwarfing the planes as they land.
Shooting distance is 21,5km (13.35 mi).
5:10 am

We’ll set up our gear and wait for the magic to unfold.
Our goal is to capture the stunning alignment of the setting Moon with the planes landing at Dubai airport.
The Moon, nearly full at 98.9%, will provide a surreal backdrop, allowing us to frame the aircraft against its vast, glowing surface.
The early morning light will add a subtle glow to the scene, enhancing the clarity and detail of our shots and emphasizing the contrast between the Moon's immense size and the planes.
To achieve this, a telephoto lens (the longer the focal length, the better) will be essential for capturing the detailed alignment and achieving the tight framing needed for this striking image.
Moonset is at 6:36 am during the nautical twilight.
Blue hour begins at 6:37 am, golden hour begins at 6:47 am, Sunrise is at 7:01 am and golden hour ends at 7:34 am.
7:35 am
Breakfast at the Shangri-la Dubai Hotel, a truly unforgettable one, followed by some downtime.
11:05 am
Join Andy and Nico for a post-processing class!
This focused session will teach you how to optimize RAW files, balance exposure and color, and build a consistent editing workflow.
1:05 pm
Recharge with a relaxed lunch at the hotel.
Right after that, take some time to rest, back up your files, or review the morning’s edits at your own pace.
4:20 pm

After a 50-minute drive, we’ll get to Dubai Harbour.
At Sunset we’ll get a clear view of the Burj Al Arab, the luxurious hotel known for its sail-shaped design.
The idea is to capture the Moon (99,8%) over the helipad of the Burj Al Arab (210 m, 690 ft) and the distant Dubai skyline.
The Moon's relative size is 30.4 m (99 ft). Natural light at the shooting time (5:57 pm) is golden hour (elevation of the Sun is 1.03º)... Perfect light!
Plan & Pray!
The setting Sun will illuminate the glass of the Burj Al Arab's sail, making it pop with warm, golden hues.
As the light fades into blue hour, the residual light will still highlight the Burj Al Arab while the Moon will "sit" on the helipad.
On the left side of the Burj Al Arab, far in the distance, we will also capture the amazing skyline with Burj Khalifa standing tall.
For this evening session, a telephoto lens will be crucial to frame the Moon with the Burj Al Arab and capture the details of the distant skyline.
A mid-range lens will also work well to incorporate more of the surrounding landscape, including the serene waters of the Arabian Gulf and the expansive sky.
Golden hour begins at 5:31 pm, Moonrise (99.8%) is at 5:36 pm, Sunset is at 6:03 pm, golden hour ends at 6:17 pm and blue hour ends at 6:26 pm.
8:05 pm
Dinner at the Shangri-la Dubai Hotel.
09:35 pm
What a day this has been!
Time to sleep, already dreaming of more Moon alignments and more legendary photos.
Photographic Pills:
- Moon (98.9%) alignment with planes during the nautical twilight (Moon silhouettes).
- Moon (99.8%) sitting on the helipad of Burj Al Arab at Sunset.
Day 3. Monday, February 2nd - The Giant and the Moon

4:30 am
Gooooood morning PhotoPillers!
Are you ready for another beautiful day full of incredible experiences?
Yeah?
Alright! Get your stuff ready!
5:20 am
As usual...
We begin our third day in Dubai early, setting out to a unique location in the industrial area, offering a clear view of the Burj Khalifa from afar.
5:40 am

Although the site itself isn’t particularly picturesque, we’ve carefully selected for its perfect alignment of the full Moon (100%) and the world's tallest building.
The shooting distance is 5.9 km (3.6 mi), and the apparent Moon size 54 m (177 ft).
The idea is to photograph the Full Moon as it gets closer and closer to the structure until it goes behind it.
Here a telephoto lens is a must. We’ll zoom in to frame the Moon and the building, emphasizing their dramatic scale difference.
Moonset is at 7:20 am, during golden hour.
Blue hour begins at 6:37 am, golden hour begins at 6:46 am, Sunrise is at 7:01 am and golden hour ends at 7:33 am.
7:55 am
Breakfast at the Shangri-la Dubai Hotel.
10:20 am

Time to explore Old Dubai and Dubai Creek.
Our photo walk will take us through the historic heart of the city, where we’ll capture the vibrant colors, textures, and cultural scenes that make this area so unique.
From the bustling souks to the traditional wooden boats on the creek, there’s no shortage of fascinating subjects to photograph.

12:20 pm
Enjoy a delicious lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, offering an authentic taste of the region's culinary delights.
2:00 pm
Siesta time! Take a well-deserved nap, resting and recharging for the adventures ahead.
4:40 pm
At Sunset, we'll head to the top of The Palm Tower and step out onto The View Palm Jumeirah, a breathtaking 360-degree observation deck.
It offers one of Dubai’s most iconic perspectives. From the 52nd floor, you’ll capture the full outline of Palm Jumeirah, the shimmering Arabian Gulf, and the towering skyline of Dubai Marina, all in a single frame. At Sunset, this panoramic scene is bathed in warm light, revealing the vast scale and design of the city.

Golden hour begins at 5:32 pm, Sunset is at 6:03 pm, golden hour ends at 6:18 pm, blue hour ends at 6:27 pm and Moonrise (99.2%) is at 6:40 pm.
8:00 pm
After our final shot of the day, we'll enjoy a relaxed group dinner at the hotel. It's a chance to unwind, share photographic highlights, exchange tips, and connect with fellow photographers. Recharge with local cuisine as we prepare for tomorrow’s shoots.
9:30 pm
Time to rest and prepare gear for the next day’s session.
Photographic Pills:
- Moon (100%) alignment with the Burj Khalifa at Sunrise.
- Midday shots in Old Dubai and Dubai Creek.
- Sunset, golden hour, blue hour, Moonset (99.2%) at The View Palm Jumeirah.
Day 4. Tuesday, February 3rd - The Sun & The Camel

4:15 am
Get up!
Today’s another (very) early day, so grab your breakfast to go and get ready for another amazing adventure in Dubai.
5:00 am
The day starts with an early morning journey deep into the serene desert landscape.
We’ll drive to a remote area of the dunes, away from the city’s lights and noise, arriving with enough time to prepare for an incredible Sunrise photo session.
6:00 am
This location offers a vast, untouched backdrop of golden sands, perfect for capturing our two unique subjects inside the rising Sun: a camel handler and his camel.
Be ready to work fast, surprisingly enough the Sun rises really fast (you’ll see!).
We’ve got work to do this morning!
As dawn breaks and the Sun begins to rise, we’ll photograph a camel handler in traditional attire with his camel, framed against the rising star.
A telephoto lens will be key for the shot, allowing us to zoom in on the camel and the handler while framing them against the stunning backdrop of the desert and sky.
Blue hour begins at 6:36 am, golden hour begins at 6:46 am, Sunrise is at 7:00 am, golden hour ends at 7:33 am and Moonset at 7:58 am.
8:45 am
We’re back to enjoy another astonishing breakfast at our hotel. Afterward, the rest of the morning is all yours.
Time to either rest or review your morning shots...
Or maybe both things ;)
12:00 pm
Enjoy lunch before our afternoon session. A good time to hydrate, reset, and prepare your gear.
1:30 pm
We will meet for a practical workshop on PhotoPills.
Thanks to Andy and Nico, you'll learn to precisely plan shots of the Sun and Moon to always be in the right place at the right time. You’ll transform your vision into stunning realities!
4:25 pm

Dubai is famous for its skyline, right?
Let’s make the most of it.
We'll be positioned along the Dubai Canal, facing the skyline with Burj Khalifa at its center.
This symmetrical city view, reflected on the canal's still water, offers a striking visual balance as day transitions to night.
We’ll capture the entire skyline, anchored by the Burj Khalifa and mirrored on the canal, with a sky gradient from warm orange to deep purples.
City lights will gradually illuminate the buildings, forming a near-perfect reflection.
Golden hour begins at 5:32 pm, Sunset is at 6:04 pm, golden hour ends at 6:19 pm, blue hour ends at 6:28 pm.
8:00 pm
After a day of exhilarating discoveries, we will have a delightful dinner at the hotel.
9:00 pm
Sleep time!
Have a good rest and get ready for tomorrow.
Photographic Pills:
- Sun silhouette of Camel and handler at Sunrise.
- Sunset, golden hour, and blue hour on the Dubai Canal.
Day 5. Wednesday, February 4th - The Grand Mosque

5:25 am
Jump out of bed and get ready to rock...
As you know by now, on a PhotoPills Expedition, there's never a dull moment!
Today, we’re going to Abu Dhabi!
But before that...
6:25 am

We'll head straight to the Museum of the Future, on a private visit, arriving just before Sunrise to photograph this architectural marvel before it opens to the public.
Renowned for its torus-shaped design adorned with flowing Arabic calligraphy, the museum is a symbol of innovation and futuristic vision.
We'll start by capturing the building’s striking exterior in the soft morning light, which will highlight its unique curves and intricate details.
Then, with special early access, we’ll move inside to photograph the museum’s impressive interiors and exhibits.
This exclusive opportunity will allow us to capture the museum's futuristic atmosphere without any distractions, using a wide-angle lens for expansive shots and a mid-range lens for detailed close-ups.
Blue hour begins at 6:36 am, golden hour begins at 6:45 am, Sunrise is at 7:00 am and golden hour ends at 7:32 am.

9:15 am
We’re back at the Shangri-la Dubai Hotel to enjoy a delicious and well-deserved breakfast. Once we’re done we’ll check-out and go to our next destination...
11:00 am

Are you ready for a photography experiment?
Renowned for its creative and versatile spaces, Garage Studio offers the perfect environment for our next challenge: a PhotoPills-themed shoot designed to push the boundaries of studio photography.
This session will be filled with imaginative setups, allowing us to explore different lighting techniques, compositions, and creative concepts.
It's a chance to experiment and capture striking, dynamic images in a controlled studio setting.
4:10 pm
We check in at our 5* hotel in Abu Dhabi: The Millennium Al Radwah Hotel.
Then, we have enough time to freshen up before heading out to one of the city’s most breathtaking photography locations: Wahat Al Karama.
5:10 pm

As the Sun begins to set, we find ourselves at Wahat Al Karama (that translates to "Oasis of Dignity), a memorial that sits directly opposite the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
This location is perfect for capturing the mosque’s stunning architecture as it is beautifully reflected in the expansive, still water pool that stretches out before us.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world, covering an area of over 12 hectares (30 acres). It can accommodate more than 40,000 worshippers, with the main prayer hall alone holding over 7,000 people.
Suddenly...
The Sun begins to go down behind the Mosque.
The warm, golden light of the setting Sun backlights the mosque in a soft glow, accentuating its silhouette and the exquisite details of its domes, minarets, and intricate patterns. The calm water acts as a mirror, creating a flawless reflection that highlights the mosque’s symmetry and grandeur.
We aim to capture this serene scene, focusing on the interplay between the mosque and its reflection.
The reflection in the water provides a perfect symmetry, adding depth and balance to the composition, while the golden hues of Sunset enhance the tranquil atmosphere.
With a wide-angle lens, we can encompass the entire scene, from the mosque to its reflection, showcasing its full beauty and scale.
Alternatively, a mid-range lens allows for a closer focus on the architectural details or a more intimate capture of the mirrored image in the water, without including too much sky, emphasizing the mosque’s intricate design and the serene surroundings.
This lens setup will allow for a variety of compositions that capture both the grandeur and the calm of this iconic location.
Golden hour begins at 5:38 pm, Sunset is at 6:09 pm, golden hour ends at 6:23 pm and blue hour ends at 6:33 pm.

7:00 pm
Dinner at the The Millennium Al Radwah Hotel.
10:00 pm
What a day!
And tomorrow is the Secret Day!
Photographic Pills:
- Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at the Museum of the Future (outdoor and indoor).
- Experimental PhotoPills indoor session at Garage Studio.
- Sunset, golden hour and blue hour with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Day 6. Thursday, February 5th - The Secret

But on February 5th we’ll do something very special...
What will that be?
Well, you'll have to be there, with us, to figure it out :P
Day 7. Friday, February 6th - The Farewell

4:15 am
Wake up!
Our last day has come... Time flies!
But we still have a final surprise to end the Expedition in full swing ;)
6:15 am
On our final morning, we’ll take to the skies for a magical Sunrise session aboard a hot air balloon over the vast desert.
As we gently rise above the undulating dunes, the early morning light begins to cast its soft, golden glow across the landscape, bringing the serene beauty of the desert to life.
From this aerial perspective, the textures and patterns of the sand become more pronounced, creating a stunning tapestry of light and shadow that stretches out as far as the eye can see.

Our main focus will be to capture the breathtaking desert landscape from above as the sun rises, bathing the dunes in warm, golden hues.
The shifting light will highlight the natural curves and contours of the sand, creating a dramatic visual contrast that is both awe-inspiring and tranquil.
We’ll also aim to photograph the other hot air balloons floating in the distance, their vibrant colors standing out against the soft tones of the desert and the emerging glow of the Sunrise.
These images will not only showcase the expansive beauty of the desert but also the dynamic presence of the balloons, adding a lively element to the serene morning scene.
To make the most of this session, a wide-angle lens will be perfect for capturing the sweeping views of the desert and the intricate patterns of the sand from above. This lens will allow us to convey the vastness and grandeur of the landscape, emphasizing the scale of the dunes beneath us.
A mid-range lens will also be useful for zooming in on the other hot air balloons, capturing the details of their colorful designs as they float gracefully against the backdrop of the desert and the rising sun.
This combination of lenses will help us create a varied and captivating portfolio of images, capturing both the expansive beauty of the desert and the vibrant activity of the hot air balloons in flight.
6:45 am

To conclude our adventure, while in flight...
We will be treated to an incredible falcon show, offering a glimpse into a tradition deeply rooted in Dubai’s history and culture.
Falcons hold a special place in the hearts of the Emirati people, symbolizing strength and heritage.
During this traditional falconry demonstration, you will experience firsthand the skills and techniques used by expert falconers to train these magnificent birds of prey.
Blue hour begins at 6:35 am, golden hour begins at 6:44 am, Sunrise is at 6:59 am and golden hour ends at 7:31 am.
7:45 am
Breakfast in the desert.

Do you want an example of how huge this will be?
This is a glimpse of what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland... But we had so many adventures and it was so much fun... We can’t wait for Dubai and Abu Dhabi!
But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!
Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.
Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
