Day 1. Sunday, May 11th - Welcome to Tuscany

It’s early Sunday afternoon...

And you land in Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region, Italy.

Although, I recommend you to arrive the day before to have an extra day to decompress and enjoy Florence’s culture, Renaissance art and architecture... like the magnificent Duomo Cathedral, with its impressive red dome dominating the city’s skyline.

2:00 pm

Tuscany is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, ancient farmhouses, and the unique soft light that has captivated artists for centuries.

After picking you up at the airport we’ll drive directly to our private “podere” – an idyllic villa perched upon the hills of the beautiful Tuscan countryside overlooking the picturesque landscape of Val d’Orcia.

The word “podere” is quintessentially Tuscan, often referring to a farmhouse or estate.

This will be our basecamp for the entire week.

4:30 pm

After settling into our rooms, we will gather for some local delicacies - delightful cakes and refreshing beverages. Welcome to the heart of Tuscany!

5:00 pm

Expedition briefing...

Neil and Felix will go over the expedition itinerary, logistics, equipment and safety instructions for the week.

It’s also time to get to know each other a bit more and answer all your questions.

5:30 pm

Since the light won't wait for us...

As the day turns to dusk, we'll make our way to the hills just south of San Quirico d'Orcia.

There, we'll find two lone cypress trees standing proudly against the rolling hills.

Grab your telephoto lens and have fun experimenting with the composition – try centering the trees or playing with off-balance shots, always aiming for that perfect harmony.

And if there are clouds, why don’t you include them in your shot?

6:45 pm

Our next stop is just a quick drive down the road, where two majestic oak trees are waiting for us.

Their twisted branches and sprawling canopies offer a different texture and mood.

For a stunning shot, try using a wide-angle lens to capture their elegance, or switch to a longer focal length in portrait mode to highlight all the unique details and character of each tree.

Let your creativity run wild!

7:15 pm

As the Sun starts to set, stretching out shadows and filling the scene with a soft, golden light, we arrive at our Sunset spot by the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.

This famous little church, standing alone in the middle of wide, open fields, perfectly captures the peaceful beauty and timeless feel the area is known for.

Now, we get to decide – do we snap a shot of the church glowing in the Sunset's backlight, or focus on its lovely front?

So open PhotoPills and check where exactly the Sun is about to set.

Golden hour begins at 7:46 pm, Sunset is at 8:26 pm, golden hour ends at 8:45 pm and blue hour ends at 8:58 pm.

9:30 pm

After a long day of exploring the countryside and hunting for the perfect photo, we finally head back to the villa.

As soon as we pull up, the mouthwatering smell from the kitchen hits us, a clear sign that dinner’s about to start – and we’ve definitely earned it!

Tonight’s menu, crafted by a local chef, is full of Tuscan dishes, letting us dive into the amazing flavors of the region.

The meals switch up every day, offering a mix of Italian favorites and international bites.

11:00 pm

Our first day in Tuscany isn’t just about capturing great photos; it’s about soaking in the vibe of the place, learning a bit of its history, tasting the amazing food, and really living in the moment.

Time to call it off... Tomorrow, we’re off to capture those famous cypress trees!

Photographic pills:

  • Daytime shots of lone trees and green rolling hills.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.

Day 2. Monday, May 12th - The Cypresses and the Moon Silhouette

5:15 am

Tucked under the bridge, we find the perfect spot to catch the Sunrise. It’s called Boschetto dei Cipressi. If we’re lucky, the sky will start to light up with an amazing mix of colors.

Standing there, looking out over the rolling Tuscan hills, the cypress trees off in the distance seem to call us. We’ll play around with our camera shots – maybe framing some wildflowers in the front, or just waiting for that first golden sunlight to hit the horizon.

Blue hour begins at 5:21 am, golden hour begins 5:34 am, Sunrise is at 5:53 am and golden hour ends at 6:34 am.

7:30 am

Over a delicious breakfast back at the villa, we chat about what we've been up to, swap stories about our photos, and get pumped up for the fun that’s still to come.

9:00 am

Time to relax after waking up so early this morning...

12:30 pm

Lunch specially prepared by our chef.

2:00 pm

PhotoPills Class!

Neil and Felix will show you how to plan your photos with PhotoPills... sharing lots of tips on the way!

3:30 pm

Now it’s time for a roundtable session.

The idea is each PhotoPills Master spends some time sitting down with 6 different PhotoPillers for 15 minutes each.

During that time, you can ask about anything related to photography – whether you need advice, feedback on your photos, help planning shots with PhotoPills, or even a bit of guidance on editing your images. It's totally up to you!

5:30 pm

The afternoon light gives the landscape a whole new vibe.

When you think of Tuscany, one of the first images that pops into your head is probably a dirt road lined with cypress trees. And now it’s time to chase it.

So we’re off to Quinciano, where those tall cypress trees are just waiting to be captured by our cameras.

6:00 pm

As we keep moving around the area, we spot a lone tree standing tall with rolling hills behind it...

Off in the distance, there's a single tree sitting between some gentle hills, which is perfect for creating simple, yet stunning, photos.

But it's not just the tree – those hills have a way of drawing you in, making them great subjects on their own. And if the weather's on your side, the hills get this beautiful soft lighting, with a few fluffy clouds in the sky that practically beg to be part of the shot.

Let’s pull over onto the gravel road, to try to find just the right angle!

7:15 pm

Our final destination for the day is an incredible location with a solitary oak tree, rolling hills, a bunch of cypresses in the distance and an open sky.

This location is perfect for our first Moon shot of the expedition and to practice what we have learned about PhotoPills!

Can you imagine it?

To align the Full Moon behind the dark silhouette of the lone oak tree as it rises over the horizon, while standing among the lush rolling hills of Tuscany and as we enter the natural twilight!

From where we're standing, the Moon is going to look huge – about 19 m (62 ft) compared to the tree – which will make for a really cool and almost otherworldly shot.

We begin taking photos as soon as the Moon starts peeking over the hillside, making sure to catch that perfect moment when it sits right behind the oak.

As the Moon climbs higher in the sky, we keep shooting and try out different angles until it gets too high to fit both the tree and the Moon in the same frame.

Golden hour begins at 7:47 pm, Sunset is at 8:27 pm, golden hour ends at 20:47 pm and blue hour ends at 9:00 pm.

9:45 pm

Here we are, back at the villa, sitting down for a great dinner and letting the memories of the day sink in. We chat, we reflect, and we look forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Isn’t it exciting?

11:00 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Boschetto dei Cipressi.
  • Towering cypress trees afternoon shots in Quinciano.
  • Lonely tree on the way to Asciano.
  • Moon silhouette with a solitary oak tree during the nautical twilight.

Day 3. Tuesday, May 13th - The Old Town, the Moon and the Gladiator

4:15 am

Wake up!

Last night we took advantage of the Full Moonrise to get an amazing minimalistic shot. But today, we’re kicking things off early to catch the Full Moon setting.

Our spot? It’s one of the many rolling hills we’ve been using as backdrops during this trip.

We are located with a direct view towards the beautiful old town Montalcino, which sits on a hill about over 12 km (7.45 mi) away from our shooting spot.

This long distance allows us to capture a huge 100-meter Moon during the golden hour. This way we can include a bit of the surrounding landscape, the town Montalcino and a massive Moon hovering above the town.

We’ll be shooting from the moment when the Moon is still a bit too high in the frame over the perfect alignment until the Moon disappears behind the hills.

For this epic alignment, we’re bringing out the big guns. Time to grab the longest lenses we’ve got!

Blue hour begins at 5:19 am, golden hour begins 5:32 am, Sunrise is at 5:52 am and golden hour ends at 6:32 am.

5:45 am

We’re not done with the morning yet, because who wants to waste that beautiful Tuscan morning light, right? Even though the Moon has set, we’ve still got plenty to enjoy.

Next up, we’re heading back to visit an old friend from our Moonrise adventure: the ancient holm oak. It’s just a short drive through the gorgeous rolling hills, and this time, we’ll get up close and personal with it.

Doesn’t that sound like fun?

7:30 am

As we return to our charming villa in Tuscany, the aroma of a delicious breakfast wafts through the air – freshly baked pastries, rich espresso, and seasonal fruits await, promising a delightful start to our day.

After enjoying this culinary treat, we have the perfect opportunity to unwind. You can choose to take a peaceful nap, relax by the pool, or socialize with fellow guests.

If you’re curious about some of the PhotoPills features or want to improve your photographic skills, Felix and Neil are on hand to share their insights and answer any questions you might have.

12:30 pm

The smell of real Italian pizza fills the air. Made by one of Italy’s best pizza cooks, this delicious treat gives you a true taste of Italy, just like the beautiful places we’ve seen.

3:00 pm

We spend the afternoon heading south of San Quirico (part of the gorgeous UNESCO world heritage site Val d’Orcia). Huge fields stretch out in neat, almost perfect patterns carved by the plows and time, with a few trees here and there, standing out against the golden and green backdrop.

The gentle hills create a feeling of calm and wide open space, and it's in this peaceful setting that you’ll find some of the most beautiful, stand-alone trees.

There’s this one tree standing alone between two hills. From where we're shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer's eye right to our subject. The colors of the hills will change depending on what crops are growing at the time, giving us a variety of shades that add depth and make for more interesting shots.

4:30 pm

Next up is the area around Palazzo di Geta, and it's got this really peaceful, almost lonely vibe. The trees stand apart, each one unique, set against a vast, open space.

We're going to take a landscape shot from this little elevated spot, looking south over the rolling hills. The plan is to focus on the two trees that stand perfectly in the middle of the scene, with a farm framed by cypress trees in the background.

From where we’re shooting, we can use the hills to guide the viewer’s eye straight to our subject. The colors will totally depend on whatever crops are growing at the moment, so each hill might end up looking different from the others. This adds depth and makes our composition feel more lively and interesting.

5:40 pm

As we stroll into Pienza, you can really feel the mix of culture and food. The cobblestone streets, old Renaissance buildings, and lively piazzas all have their own stories to tell.

We make a stop at Gelateria Buon Gusto, where the flavors are packed with that classic Italian charm, making our visit even sweeter.

6:50 pm

As the evening rolls in, Podere Terrapille is ready to welcome you.

If you've seen the movie “Gladiator”, you’ll recognize this path – it’s the one surrounded by golden wheat fields swaying in the breeze, with tall cypress trees lining the way. At the end of it all, there's a villa standing quietly, full of old memories.

In the distance, the mountains catch the last bit of sunlight, making the view even more breathtaking.

Golden hour begins at 7:47 pm, Sunset is at 8:27 pm, golden hour ends at 8:47 pm and blue hour ends at 9:00 pm.

9:40 pm

The day wraps up back at our cozy villa. As we sit down for dinner, the sound of clinking glasses isn’t just about celebrating today – it’s about the excitement of all the adventures we’ve still got ahead in Tuscany.

11:00 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Moon shot aligned with Montalcino at Sunrise.
  • Afternoon shots of isolated trees at San Quirico and Palazzo di Geta.
  • Ancient streets and architecture at the beautiful village of Pienza.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Podere Terrapille (Gladiator’s villa).

Day 4. Wednesday, May 14th - The Golden Mist and the Cypress Lines

5:05 am

In the heart of Tuscany, you'll find a landscape that's like a work of art – every hill, every tree, every villa has its own story to tell. By day four of our trip, we’re diving deeper into those stories, trying to capture more than just the sights – we’re after the true spirit of this place, and that’s what we’ll try to accomplish during the early morning at our special location.

Podere Belvedere, with its cozy, rustic vibe, is a spot that stands out. Tucked between rolling fields, it gives you a perfect view of classic Tuscan villas, all wrapped in the soft, swirling morning mist.

As we settle in, the magic of the place really starts to show. During the blue hour, the villas have this dreamy glow, with their windows reflecting the last bits of night. But when the golden hour kicks in, the whole scene sharpens up, showing off every detail – from the terracotta rooftops to the rich green fields spread out below.

Blue hour begins at 5:18 am, golden hour begins at 5:31 am, Sunrise is at 5:51 am and golden hour ends at 6:31 am.

7:30 am

We head back to our villa, with its stone walls and lush gardens giving off that classic Tuscan vibe. There's a delicious breakfast waiting for us!

11:00 am

Post-processing class with Neil and Felix.

12:45 pm

Lunch calls!

2:00 pm

Siesta time (nap time).

03:40 pm

After a 40-minute drive we arrive at the historical charm of Siena.

Here, we have some free time, allowing you to explore the city's cobblestone streets, marvel at its medieval architecture, and absorb its age-old allure.

It’s the perfect time to improve your urban photography skills!

5:55 pm

Our next stop is going to be something special. As we make our way to the spot, the scenery really starts to open up...

There’s a charming farm sitting on a lovely hill, surrounded by those classic rolling hills you see all around this region.

The view is especially magical when the Sun peeks through the scattered clouds, creating little pockets of light that dance across the hills. That wonderful light makes the fields pop, with soft shadows and highlights that bring the whole scene to life.

We’re timing our visit for when the Sun’s still pretty high, so we can catch that soft light coming from behind and to the left. This kind of side lighting will make the textures of the hills stand out more, giving the whole scene a nice sense of depth.

Depending on the conditions, we’ve got two ways to go: we can go wide to capture the whole farm and its surroundings for that epic landscape shot, or we can zoom in and focus on the key details, like the farm and the gentle curves of the hills.

If you’re fast, you can do both ;)

07:20 pm

After a short drive, we arrive in this beautiful spot – rows of cypress trees with Siena's outline in the background. The whole landscape is glowing in the Sunset.

The way the land stretches out calls for some zoomed-in shots, so we set up our tripods nice and high to make sure we get the whole view just right.

Golden hour begins at 7:49 pm, Sunset is at 8:30 pm, golden hour ends at 8:50 pm and blue hour ends at 9:03 pm.

9:00 pm

It’s time to drive back to our villa. As we get there, we can already smell the amazing dinner cooking, and it instantly pulls us in.

11:00 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Podere Belvedere.
  • Afternoon streets and architecture shots in Siena.
  • Late afternoon shots with a secret farm.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour with the skyline of Siena.

Day 5. Thursday, May 15th - Serpentine Roads

4:45 am

Just before dawn, while the night sky still lingers, we set off towards Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta. The path is quiet and peaceful, and we’re dreaming of a beautiful Tuscan Sunrise.

5:15 am

As we get there, the unique shape of the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta comes into view. With the soft light of the early morning starting to light up the scene, we set up our cameras, using the tall cypress trees to perfectly frame the little chapel.

If you're into a more simple, clean look, you can always snap a shot of the chapel standing alone on the hill. A telephoto lens really comes in handy for this – bringing the chapel closer and making it look almost magical against the early morning light.

The Sun finally rises, casting warm golden tones over the Tuscan hills. After getting the shots we wanted, we head back to our villa, feeling that our dream has come true.

Blue hour begins at 5:17 am, golden hour begins at 5:30 am, Sunrise is at 5:50 am and golden hour ends at 6:30 am.

7:15 am

Back at the villa, the mouthwatering smell of breakfast is everywhere. It’s the perfect way to kick off what’s sure to be an exciting day.

8:00 am

Time to relax and catch up on some (well deserved) sleep.

12:30 pm

Lunch specially prepared by our chef.

3:00 pm

Montalcino is calling!

Just a quick drive, and we’re in this charming, old town. The cobblestone streets and ancient buildings feel like we’ve stepped into a different era. As we wander around, the town slowly reveals its stories and hidden gems.

5:10 pm

As we leave Montalcino, we head off towards a really beautiful location.

The drive itself is just as stunning as where we're going, and we can't help but make a few random stops along the way to capture with your camera the true charm of the Tuscan countryside – think rolling hills and those classic cypress trees stretching out across the horizon.

6:10 pm

Next up is the "Eroica" road, a legendary route famous for its stunning views.

The way the light and shadows dance across the scenery is just incredible, and we can't stop shooting all kinds of compositions. The telephoto lens really comes in handy here, helping us capture all the little details of the distant landscapes.

6:30 pm

Our day's final destination will surely surprise you...

You know that winding road lined with cypress trees? It's seriously one of the most stunning spots around. The way the road curves and snakes through the hills is like nature's way of leading your eyes straight to a charming farmhouse – Agriturismo Baccoleno.

A brief hike takes us to the planned spot where the road, lined with cypress trees, leads the eye towards the podere. The scene is set for a mid-range shot, with the golden hour light casting a warm glow over everything.

When you're setting up your camera, try to frame it so that the cypress-lined road naturally guides the viewer towards Agriturismo Baccoleno, which is kind of the star of the show here.

As the Sun starts to set, it throws this soft, glowing light across the hills and trees, making everything look magical with that beautiful contrast of light and shadow.

As the light shifts, it's a great time to adjust your focus and start capturing the smaller, more personal details of the landscape, all bathed in that gorgeous golden hour glow.

Golden hour begins at 7:49 pm, Sunset is at 8:30 pm, golden hour ends at 8:50 pm and blue hour ends at 9:03 pm.

10:00 pm

The day wraps up with a delicious dinner at our villa.

11:00 pm

Bed time!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta.
  • Afternoon streets and architecture shots in Montalcino.
  • Late afternoon shots at a really beautiful place.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour shots of the curvy road towards Agriturismo Baccoleno.

Day 6. Friday, May 16th - The Secret

I’ve been giving you lots of details of this amazing expedition to Tuscany.

Maybe far too many...

But on May 3rd we’ll do something very special...

What will that be?

Well, you'll have to be there, with us, to figure it out :P

Day 7. Saturday, May 17th - The Farewell

5:00 am

Before the rest of the world wakes up, in the calm stillness of the Tuscan pre-dawn, we head out for our last Sunrise shoot. We can already imagine that lone pine tree standing tall against the early light, calling us.

As we walk to our spot, the horizon begins to show hints of that soft, blue hour glow.

There it is – a single pine tree sitting beautifully on top of a hill, its shape becoming clearer with each minute.

I suggest you capture the tree against the wide, open sky for a clean, stunning shot.

As the Sun rises, its rays start to filter through the branches of nearby cypress trees, giving us another chance for a gorgeous photo.

You can also zoom in with your telephoto lens to catch the smallest details of the Tuscan countryside far in the distance.

The Tuscan Sun paints everything in gold one last time, and as it climbs higher into the blue sky, we slowly make our way back to the van, wrapping up our adventure.

Blue hour begins at 5:15 am, golden hour begins at 5:28 am, Sunrise is at 5:48 am and golden hour ends at 6:29 am.

8:00 am

At the villa, breakfast is ready and waiting.

You can smell the coffee and fresh pastries in the air, bringing a cozy sense of nostalgia. It’s the last morning in Tuscany, and the place is filled with laughter and shared memories.

9:45 am

Our expedition wraps up with a drive to Florence, the last stop on our adventure. As we cruise along, it’s like watching a slideshow of everywhere we've been, the moments we've shared, and all the memories we've made along the way.

11:35 am

As we pull up to Florence airport, it’s time to say our goodbyes. This isn’t just the end of a trip; it’s about sending each other off with full hearts, packed with gratitude and unforgettable memories.

Over these past seven days, we haven’t just explored the beautiful Tuscan countryside – we’ve uncovered a bit of the artist in each of us. From those peaceful blue hours to the warm glow of golden hours, from the Moon alignments to the cypress-lined roads, every shot we took shows off the beauty of this place and the friendships we’ve built.

As we go our separate ways, just remember: while this adventure might be over, the journey of exploring and creating never really stops. Here’s to the amazing sights we’ve seen, the moments we’ve captured, and all the new horizons waiting for us.

Until we meet again, arrivederci and safe travels!

Do you want an example of how huge this will be?

This is a glimpse to what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland. We had so many adventures and so much fun... We can’t wait for Tuscany!

But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!

Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.

Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
