Are you in?

Around the New Moon...

From September 22nd to September 28th 2025, Laura Oppelt and Solli Kanani (PhotoPills Masters) will be travelling across the Lofoten Islands to photograph the Aurora Borealis, the Autumn Colors and the magical Golden Light along with Arctic lush landscapes, wild beaches, dramatic mountains and picturesque fishing villages...

Right around the September equinox, and right when the Sun is in the period of solar maximum, which means we will be more likely to see and photograph the dancing green lights of the Aurora!

Of course...

We’ll be taking photos all day long...

In September the total Golden Hour time lasts for about 4 hours per day in Lofoten!

But...

Can you imagine it?

The Adventure

12 PhotoPillers | 2 PhotoPills Masters | Faroe Islands | Endless legendary photos

Warning! This is not a honeymoon...

We’re recruiting 12 brave PhotoPillers (PhotoPills and photography nerds) to join us on a 7-day Expedition to photograph the Aurora Borealis, the Autumn Colors and the magical Golden Light along with some of the most precious treasures hidden in the Lofoten Islands.

Despite the cooler temperatures, September is a beautiful time to visit Lofoten, with autumn colors beginning to appear and fewer tourists than in summer.

Also...

The Sun is in the period of solar maximum, which means we will be more likely to see and photograph the dancing green lights of the aurora!

And the golden hour lasts for more than 4 hours per day.

So...

This is a non-stop adventure to chase legendary photos and you are a key asset!

We have planned tons of photos, and we’ll travel many kilometers to capture them...

But we also want to maximize our flexibility in terms of itinerary and schedule in order to take advantage of all the opportunities that the changing weather will surely put in our way.

If we're fortunate enough to be out photographing the aurora at night and it takes us into the late hours, we'll take a little extra sleep the next morning, skip Sunrise and kick start our day a bit later.

On the other hand, if the conditions make us skip the nighttime photography session, we'll rise and shine early to catch the Sunrise.

Whichever path we take, you can count on us to seize every photo opportunity and be right where the magic happens!

You are about to embark on a PhotoPills’ style journey. And it’s not going to be a honeymoon precisely... :P

You’ll be a true PhotoPiller!

Are you in?

Day 1. Monday, September 22nd - Welcome to the Lofoten Islands

1:45 pm

You’ve just touched down at Leknes airport in Lofoten, right between the 68th and 69th parallels, smack in the middle of Arctic Norway.

Welcome to the Arctic Ocean’s playground!

Here, you've got everything: jaw-dropping mountains, charming fishing villages, untouched beaches, and that incredible, ever-shifting light that makes every photo a masterpiece waiting to happen.

With bags in hand, head through the exit into the main hall – Laura Oppelt and Solli Kanani will be there to greet you... along with a few other PhotoPillers who are just as pumped for this adventure!

3:20 pm

Our first stop is Eliassen Rorbuer, right in the village of Hamnøy. It's not just any spot – this place is the oldest fisherman’s cottage resort in the Lofoten Islands, and it's got so much character. We’ll be setting up here for the first three days, and honestly, it’s the perfect base camp with its mix of history and beauty.

We’ll have a choice between traditional and modern fisherman’s cottages, plus sea house apartments, and even a cozy little restaurant called Gadus.

The cabins, or rorbuer, give us this awesome blend of old-school charm and modern comfort. They’ve kept the rustic vibe but updated things just enough to make it super comfortable. Plus, they’re right on the water, so we get those classic red and yellow cabins with unbeatable views of the mountains and fjords – seriously feels like stepping into a postcard!

Here you’ll be sharing a traditional fisherman cabin (rorbu) with another PhotoPiller. All cabins have 2 bedrooms with 2 bunk beds each...

You’ll enjoy your own private room and share the bathroom (1 bathroom for 2 PhotoPillers) and living room area.

4:30 pm

Expedition briefing with Laura and Solli at Eliassen Rorbuer. It’s time to know each other better, go over the logistics of this adventure and learn the techniques we’ll be using to photograph the aurora.

5:30 pm

Our Sunset shooting spot is at the Hamnoy Rorbu platform, just a short walk from Eliassen Rorbuer.

Just across the fjord from our cabins, there’s this awesome viewing platform that gives us the perfect angle to capture everything – our cabins, the water, and the mountains. Imagine the Sun setting behind those peaks, lighting up the clouds in these stunning colors. With the water right in front of us, it’s ideal for trying out some long exposure shots too.

This little bay is usually a bit sheltered from the wind, so if we’re lucky, we’ll get those dreamy reflections in the water along with a sky painted by the Sunset.

But before you choose your shooting spot, check PhotoPills to understand where exactly the Sun will be setting:

As the Sun sets in the west, its golden light falls on the side of the cabins in front of us.

The waves crash against the shore as we shoot our long exposures to capture the beauty of the moment.

7:25 pm

Let’s capture the blue hour from the Hamnøy bridge!

A nearby bridge perfectly frames Hamnøy’s iconic sights, including the dramatic Festhæltinden mountain and the quaint cabins. We’ll start shooting from the bridge's right side for portrait compositions and later move left for landscape shots. As blue hour sets in, the interplay of warm artificial lights against the cool twilight adds even more magic to the scene.

Golden hour begins at 5:55 pm, Sunset is at 7:09 pm, golden hour ends at 7:43 pm and blue hour ends at 8:04 pm.

8:40 pm

Dinner at Gadus Restaurant.

11:00 pm

Nighttime begins at 10:40 pm. The Moon (0.4%) is below the horizon. The warm lights of the picturesque fishing village of Hamnøy illuminates the peak behind.

If the aurora forecast looks promising, right after dinner, we will head out to photograph the northern lights above the iconic red cabins at Hamnøy.

Hamnøy is one of the best spots to photograph the northern lights in Lofoten!

2:00 am

Time to go to bed... I hope with the aurora still dancing in our minds!

Photographic Pills:

  • Sunset and golden hour at Hamnøy Rorbu platform.
  • Blue hour at Hamnøy bridge.
  • Aurora at Hamnøy bridge (if the skies are clear and there’s aurora activity).

Day 2. Tuesday, September 23rd - The Wonders of Reine

5:15 am

Wake up!

We’ll have an early morning today...

5:45 am

Let’s start walking to Hamnøy bridge.

Imagine capturing that picture-perfect view from this incredible spot right at Sunrise.

As the Sun comes up on the right, its light gradually spreads across the scene, climbing up the mountains until everything is bathed in this amazing glow. Sometimes, you get these spotlights of light moving over the landscape, which just adds to the magic – it's seriously one of the best places in the Lofoten Islands to catch a Sunrise!

7:25 am

Since the golden hour is pretty long (about 2h), we have time to try different compositions with great light at another location – Toppøya, which is just a mere 5-minute walk away.

Every corner you turn seems to have some stunning new view that makes you want to grab your camera.

This time, there’s an open view straight towards Olstinden, that super recognizable peak in Reine. Its shape is so iconic that it even shows up in the logos of Norwegian companies. You really can’t miss it!

When you’re setting up your shot, the shoreline is perfect for framing Olstinden and the surrounding mountains. Depending on the weather, you might catch some awesome reflections or a moody sky with waves rippling in the fjord.

Blue hour begins at 5:57 am, golden hour begins at 6:18 am, Sunrise is at 6:52 am and golden hour ends at 8:06 am.

9:00 am

Breakfast at Eliassen Rorbuer and down time.

11:30 am

PhotoPills Class with Laura and Solli. Get ready to learn lots of tips and tricks that will help you plan your photos much faster.

1:05 pm

Lunch at a local restaurant.

2:40 pm

After a short drive and a 20-minute hike through the Sorvagen Tindstinden hike trailhead, we reach several waterfalls.

This place is absolutely stunning when the fall colors hit. You’ll find tons of little cascades streaming down from the mountains, and it’s one of the rare spots in Lofoten where you actually get a bit more tree cover. It gives the whole area such a cozy, vibrant feel...

Definitely worth checking out!

4:25 pm

We hike back to get to our vehicles and drive to Bringen Kaffebar in Reine, where we make a quick stop.

5:15 pm

We’re now at a little UNESCO-protected town called Reine, which is located in a bay with perfect curves, and right behind it, the mighty Olstinden peak towering above. In fall, the shore here gets this gorgeous splash of colors in the few trees or bushes around, making the landscape feel serene and wild.

Now, just imagine the sky putting on a colorful show, with soft, dreamy light casting a glow over Olstinden as it reflects in the calm bay. If Mother Nature decides to bring her best, we’ll be there with cameras ready!

For the shoot, the plan is to explore different perspectives of this charming little fishing town...

We’ll start by focusing on those classic red houses up close, then move a bit toward the middle of the dam to capture panoramic shots of the whole scene. After that, we’ll head over to the left side of the bay, where the shoreline naturally guides your eyes straight to Olstinden in the background.

Golden hour begins at 5:51 pm, Sunset is at 7:05 pm, golden hour ends at 7:39 pm and blue hour ends at 8:00 pm.

8:15 pm

Tonight we have dinner at a delicious local restaurant in Reine.

9:45 pm

If the aurora activity and the weather offer us good conditions, we’ll go to a very cool location, not far from the restaurant, to capture some amazing green lights...

With a Moon of 4% below the horizon, there’s nothing to worry about.

2:10 am

Bed time! Tomorrow a new adventure awaits.

Photographic Pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Hamnøy bridge (if we didn’t photograph the aurora the night before).
  • Afternoon shots at the waterfalls in Sorvagen Tindstinden hike trailhead.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Reine.
  • Aurora at Reine (if the skies are clear and there’s aurora activity).

Day 3. Wednesday, September 24th - The Yellow Cabin And The Two Bridges

5:50 am

Just a short drive away is Sakrisøy, a charming fishing village where we'll find these classic red and yellow fisherman's cabins lined up right along the shore.

The harbor there is filled with small boats and all kinds of fishing gear, giving the place a really genuine vibe that shows us what life’s like for the local fishermen.

We've scoped out some amazing spots for photos, where we can capture those colorful cabins with the rugged mountains rising up behind them.

And there's this one yellow cabin that's just made for a perfect shot... we’re going to love it!

Blue hour begins at 6:00 am, golden hour begins at 6:22 am, Sunrise is at 6:56 am and golden hour ends at 8:10 am.

8:35 am

We go back to Eliassen Rorbuer to have a good breakfast and enjoy some down time.

11:30 am

Laura and Solli will do a post-processing class. Get ready to learn how to bring your photos to the next level.

1:20 pm

Let’s have a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

2:50 pm

Time to capture some amazing shots of not one but two stunning bridges, plus a crazy pointy mountain that looks straight out of a postcard.

First up, we’ve got the Fredvang Bridges – two iconic structures famous for their insanely scenic location. The southern one’s called the Kubholmleia Bridge, and the northern one is the Røssøystraumen Bridge. Both bridges stretch about 240 m (787 ft), with a main span of 115 m (377 ft).

These bridges are more than just crossings – they link the little village of Fredvang to nearby islands, creating a pathway through some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes you can imagine. We have dramatic mountains, calm fjords, and the crisp, clear waters of the Norwegian Sea all around. It’s like the perfect mix of human engineering and pure nature.

They’ve become a symbol of the Lofoten Islands, pulling in photographers, hikers, and travelers who want to see where rugged wilderness meets graceful architecture in this remote gem.

And if you’re up for it, this spot is made for a killer drone shot.

Looks like we’ve got a pretty packed (and photogenic) afternoon ahead!

4:55 pm

We'll be hanging out at Skagsanden beach until the last light fades from Mt. Hustinden. This location has so much to offer – it’s like a playground for photographers and nature lovers alike!

We’ve got everything from cool abstract textures in the sand to sweeping landscape views that change with the tide. The beach is constantly shifting, so there’s always something fresh to catch our eye, from unique foreground patterns to interesting sand designs.

Plus, there are these little streams, reflective pools, and beautiful rocks scattered around, giving us endless options for creative shots.

Golden hour begins at 5:46 pm, Sunset is at 7:00 pm, golden hour ends at 7:34 pm and blue hour ends at 7:55 pm.

8:05 pm

Dinner at a local restaurant.

9:00 pm

It's our third day on the hunt for the aurora, and today we’re set up at Flakstad, right at Skagsanden beach, just in time for Sunset. This place is stunning, and if the Northern Lights show up, we're coming back here to capture it all lit up in green.

Night officially falls at 10:28 pm, but honestly, if the aurora’s active, we’ll be out there even earlier, shooting during astronomical twilight. It’s going to be epic if we catch it!

12:00 am

The day comes to an end. Good night PhotoPillers!

Photographic Pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at the fishing village of Sakrisøy (if we didn’t photograph the aurora the night before).
  • Afternoon shots at the Fredvang bridges.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Flakstad beach.
  • Aurora at Flakstad beach (if the skies are clear and there’s aurora activity).

Day 4. Thursday, September 25th - The Three Beaches

5:30 am

Another early morning day begins... We’ve got a lot to photograph today :)

6:30 am

For Sunrise, we’ll be photographing the Fredvang Horseshoe bend.

Since there are no obstructions, the mountains will be catching the very first light at sunrise.

Plan & Pray!

Blue hour begins at 6:03 am, golden hour begins at 6:25 am, Sunrise is at 6:59 am, and golden hour ends at 8:14 am.

9:25 am

We’re back at Eliassen Rorbuer to get an energetic breakfast, pack our bags and head up north!

12:50 pm

After driving through some magnificent landscapes, we reach Unstad Arctic surf to have lunch.

2:00 pm

Unstad Beach is this wild, remote spot surrounded by these massive mountains, and it's all about the waves...

Surfers from all over the world flock here because when the storms roll in, the waves can get up to 5 meters high, if not more! Locals on the other hand, have this funny story about the old days – they’d actually look forward to big waves because they'd find loads of fresh fish washed up on the shore, ready to collect and eat right there.

If you’re lucky, you might catch some surfers out there battling the chilly Nordic elements.

But even if the surf’s quiet, there’s still so much to shoot. The beach is covered in these smooth, round boulders that make for amazing foregrounds in long-exposure shots. And down the little road from the beach, there’s this charming church that adds a perfect touch to any photo.

2:30 pm

We start our drive to Hattvika Lodge, our base camp for the last three days of the expedition :)

The lodge is located in an authentic fisherman’s area, where ambient oozes of history and a great view to the harbor of Hattvika. You’ll be surrounded by the islands’ typical fishermen cottages or rorbu – the distinctive red cabins lining much of the coastline.

Here you’ll be sharing a traditional fisherman cottage or rorbu with one or more PhotoPillers. You’ll enjoy your own private room and share the bathroom (1 bathroom for 2 PhotoPillers) and living room area.

5:30 pm

After a half-hour drive, we arrive at Haukland beach – one of the Lofoten Islands' gems and super popular with good reason.

The beach is surrounded by towering mountains, almost like a natural amphitheater, which makes the views incredible.

Quick tip: Head further south along the beach, and you'll catch the sunlight a bit longer!

Golden hour begins at 5:40 pm, Sunset is at 6:54 pm, golden hour ends at 7:29 pm and blue hour ends at 7:50 pm.

8:30 pm

Dinner at a local restaurant.

10:00 pm

After dinner, if the sky’s clear and the Aurora forecast looks good, we’ll head out to one of the best spots in the Lofoten Islands to catch the northern lights.

Vik is perfect for this since it faces north, which means we’ll have an awesome view of the lights dancing over the Mannen mountain, rising 400 m (or 1,312 ft) high. And if the sea’s nice and calm, it’s an amazing place to capture some reflections too.

Get ready for an adventure!

By the way, nighttime officially kicks off at 10:22 pm, and with the Moon at just 15% and below the horizon, the conditions are just right.

1:40 am

Bed time! Rest well!

Tomorrow is the secret day.

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise and golden hour at Fredvang Horseshoe bend (if we didn’t photograph the aurora the night before).
  • Afternoon shots at Unstad beach.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Haukland beach.
  • Aurora at Vik (if the skies are clear and there’s aurora activity).

Day 5. Friday, September 26th - The Secret

I’ve been giving you lots of details of this amazing expedition to the Lofoten Islands.

Maybe far too many...

But on September 26th we’ll visit a very cool location... :)

What will that be?

Well, you'll have to be there, with us, to figure it out :P

Day 6. Saturday, September 27th - The Dragon Eye

5:30 am

Just a 30-minute drive from our lodge, there’s Stortinden, a stunning triangular peak that stands at 866 m (or 2,841 ft). It’s a real showstopper and the perfect star for a sunrise shoot.

Right now in Lofoten, the Sun rises in the east, but since we’ll be facing west to get the best angle, we’ll catch that beautiful golden light hitting the side of the peak in the morning. Perfect for some dramatic shots!

Our mission is to find a good foreground to complement the peak in the background. Imagine finding a natural leading line right up to Stortinden... How awesome would that be?

Blue hour begins at 6:10 am, golden hour begins at 6:31 am, Sunrise is at 7:06 am and golden hour ends at 8:20 am.

8:55 am

We return to Hattvika lodge for breakfast and downtime.

1:25 pm

Lunch at a local restaurant in Nusfjord.

3:20 pm

After lunch, we have a stroll to the historic UNESCO heritage harbor.

4:15 pm

On our way to Vareid, we stop in a couple of very interesting locations where we can capture the beautiful and rugged landscapes of the Lofoten Islands.

5:20 pm

We’ll photograph the Sunset at the always stunning Vareid beach, on the island of Moskenesøya.

We’re heading to a spot on the left side of the bay, which is perfect for those epic, wild ocean scenes. When the sea’s in a mood, the waves crash hard against the shore, making it a dream location for capturing some seriously dramatic shots.

You’ll find these round, black rocks that the waves wash over, giving this amazing contrast that stands out beautifully. And there are tidal pools with colorful algae that add these pops of color, which makes the scene so vibrant!

And then there’s the backdrop: the mountains of Flakstadoy standing tall but close enough to add this strong, dramatic element to every shot.

There’s so much to play around with in this little slice of paradise!

Golden hour begins at 5:32 pm, Sunset is at 6:47 pm, golden hour ends at 7:21 pm and blue hour ends at 7:42 pm.

7:35 pm

Dinner at a local restaurant.

9:30 pm

Uttakleiv Beach has this beautiful, light-colored sand that really pops against the dark, rugged rocks scattered along the shore. It's got these towering mountains all around, adding a super dramatic vibe to the place.

Off to one side, you’ll spot a mix of boulders and unique rock formations – a photographer's dream, especially if you’re into capturing the northern lights. It’s perfect for those dramatic shots with loads of texture and depth.

And there’s more – there’s a rock that looks just like a dragon’s head, plus a small pool known as the dragon’s eye. Both make for epic foregrounds in photos!

If the aurora forecast looks good, right after dinner, we’ll head over to Uttakleiv Beach. Watching the northern lights dance over the dragon’s eye is absolutely a bucket-list moment!

Nighttime only goes from 10:09 pm to 3:46 am. It’s so short! The Moon (30%) is always below the horizon.

2:15 am

What a long day... with so many different shooting spots!

Time to rest.

Tomorrow we’re going home!

Photographic pills:

  • Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour at Stortinden (if we didn’t photograph the aurora the night before).
  • Afternoon shots at a viewpoint in Stjerntinden.
  • Sunset, golden hour and blue hour at Vareid beach.
  • Aurora at Uttakleiv beach (if the skies are clear and there’s aurora activity).

Day 7. Sunday, September 28th - The Farewell

6:00 am

Today is our last day in Lofoten... And there is one last shot we want to capture before heading to the airport :)

After a 30-minute drive we reach Storsandnes Beach, a breathtakingly secluded stretch of white sand surrounded by rugged mountains and dramatic coastal scenery. This peaceful spot, with its clear turquoise waters and soft sand is a perfect location for photography or simply taking in the raw beauty of Norway’s landscape.

The Sun is rising in the east, so we hope the peaks in front of us will be nicely lit :)

Blue hour begins at 6:13 am, golden hour begins at 6:34 am, Sunrise is at 7:09 am and golden hour ends at 8:24 am.

9:05 am

Breakfast at Hattvika Lodge and checkout.

10:30 am

But before we head to the airport, we have an image review session with Laura and Solli.

12:15 am

We arrive at Leknes airport...

Thank you Lofoten Islands, we'll be back!

And see you soon my friends!

Life goes on...

Do you want an example of how huge this will be?

This is a glimpse to what happened in the PhotoPills Expedition to Iceland. We had so many adventures and so much fun... We can’t wait for the Lofoten Islands!

But you don’t have to take our word for granted. Here’s what some PhotoPillers say about the PhotoPills adventures:

“I went to Iceland expecting to have the opportunity to photograph the marvelous landscape and master nightscapes. What I encountered was so much more – 14 kindred souls from across the globe who share a passion for photography. Together we expanded our creative boundaries, learned from one another and had an insane amount of fun in the process. I am confident that everyone came away from the experience a better photographer.”

“From the very moment the guys from PhotoPills announced the expedition to Iceland... I didn’t think it twice! I was using PhotoPills but not at its full capacity, so I had no better chance to learn from the creators of this amazing app. The experience was even more amazing than anything I could have imagined. In Iceland, I discovered a bunch of folks as crazy about photography as I am. I had a blast!

Photography is a continuous learning process, you always find something new that motivates you to improve. And this adventure made me improve more than I could imagine.”

"The PhotoPills guys know how to create a fantastic experience. They bring an infectiously fun energy and are always willing to drop some handy photography knowledge on you that you will take with you. You take their trip and you'll for sure have a good time, get some amazing pics and leave a better photographer."

“During my experience in Iceland I lived wonderful moments and had surprises that were beyond the expected. It completely exceeded my initial expectations! Sharing knowledge, experiences and ways of working and living photography with such a great group has been one of the most enriching life experiences I have ever had.

Who he said that learning and knowledge sharing can not be wonderfully fun?”

“I can't say enough about what a fantastic time I had during the PhotoPills Iceland photo tour! The guys from PhotoPills and Donal Boyd were so knowledgeable, accommodating, and especially lots of fun. Never a dull moment – nonstop action and shooting of amazing landscapes for 10 days. I came away with enough images and memories to last a lifetime!”
